Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are once again at the center of controversy, 

this time for their outspoken criticism of Meta’s decision to relax its content moderation and third-party fact-checking policies. 

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently released a statement condemning Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, 

and Threads, for “allowing more abuse and normalizing hate speech” following the company’s decision to end third-party fact-checking on its platform. 

The Sussexes, known for their vocal advocacy on social issues, expressed concern over the implications of this change, 

urging Meta to reconsider its stance and commit to making online spaces safer. 

They also applauded leaders who resist “kowtowing to bullying,” a sentiment many interpreted as a call for greater regulation of online content.

However, their statement has drawn sharp criticism from political figures, including Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation. Gardiner accused the couple of making a “huge mockery” of the Royal Family, calling their political commentary “hugely inappropriate” given their status as non-working members of the British monarchy. According to Gardiner, the Sussexes’ involvement in overtly political matters undermines the Royal Family’s traditional neutrality. He went on to argue that their use of royal titles to advance personal and political agendas is in direct contradiction to the principles that the monarchy has historically adhered to. “For members of the Royal Family to engage in such overtly political matters is, quite frankly, highly inappropriate. It goes against royal protocol,” Gardiner said. “Their statement wasn’t a moderate call for dialogue or understanding; it was an outright political rant.”
