Damon Wayans confessed in an interview that he intentionally “set a trap” to get fired from SNL. Why did he do this?

Damon Wayans, the celebrated comedian and actor,

recently opened up about the controversial incident that led to his firing from Saturday Night Live (SNL) during his brief time on the show in the early 1980s.

Known for his work on In Living Color and his successful stand-up career, Wayans reflected on the moment that caused him to be let go from the iconic late-night comedy show.

According to Wayans, his departure was the result of a particular sketch in which he “snapped” and acted out of frustration, leading to an immediate dismissal.

Wayans’ tenure on SNL lasted just one season, making it one of the shortest stints in the show’s long history.

Despite his undeniable comedic talent, Wayans’ experience with the show was fraught with tension.

The comedian, who would later become known for his boundary-pushing humor, has previously discussed the challenges he faced during his time on SNL, including the strict rules and creative limitations imposed by the show’s producers.

The specific moment that led to Wayans’ firing came during the production of a sketch. In an interview, Wayans explained that he had been growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of creative freedom he was allowed on the show. According to him, his frustrations reached a boiling point, and in that moment, he chose to defy the constraints of the sketch. Wayans admitted that instead of sticking to the script or following the producer’s direction, he made a decision to improvise, resulting in a moment that would ultimately cost him his job.

“I snapped, I just did not care,” Wayans said of the incident. He went on to describe how he felt completely stifled by the rigid environment at SNL, where the pressure to perform perfectly and stay within the lines of the script left little room for his more freewheeling comedic instincts. “I was trying to fit in, trying to do what they wanted, but it wasn’t working for me,” he recalled. “So, I just did what I wanted, and that was the end of my time there.”

While Wayans didn’t go into specifics about which sketch led to his firing, he explained that it was the culmination of his growing frustration with the SNL environment. He described the feeling of being creatively confined as something that led to a sense of rebellion in him. “At that moment, I realized I had nothing left to lose,” Wayans said. “I had been following all the rules, but it wasn’t making me happy, and I just had to do things my own way.”

Though his departure from SNL was sudden, it did not signal the end of his career. In fact, the experience seemed to fuel his determination to pursue projects where he could have more control over his comedy. Wayans went on to become one of the driving forces behind In Living Color, where his ability to push boundaries and showcase his creativity truly flourished. He also found success with his stand-up comedy specials and later starred in sitcoms such as My Wife and Kids.

In hindsight, Wayans believes that his firing from SNL was a pivotal moment in his career. “I learned a lot from that experience,” he explained. “It showed me that I need creative freedom to thrive. I’m not the kind of person who can just stick to the script, especially when I feel like I have something important to say.”

Despite the way things ended on SNL, Wayans has never spoken ill of the show or its creators. He acknowledged that the environment simply wasn’t the right fit for him at that stage in his career. “It wasn’t a bad experience overall,” he said. “It just wasn’t for me. I wanted to be in control of my own comedy, and I wasn’t able to do that there.”

Today, Damon Wayans is regarded as one of the most influential and innovative comedians of his generation. His experiences in comedy, from his early days on SNL to his time as a key player on In Living Color, have shaped the landscape of modern comedy. And although his time on SNL was brief, the lessons learned from his firing helped him forge a path that would lead to even greater success.

Looking back on the incident, Wayans sees it as a defining moment in his career. “Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions to stay true to yourself,” he said. “And for me, that means taking risks and pushing boundaries. That’s what comedy is all about.”

Wayans’ firing from SNL may have been a turning point, but it certainly wasn’t the end of his career. In fact, it helped him realize the importance of creative freedom and paved the way for him to become one of comedy’s most influential voices.
