Jon Hamm is expressing deep gratitude to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels 

for playing a pivotal role in expanding his career beyond the brooding dramatic roles that followed his Mad Men success. 

The actor, best known for portraying the charismatic but troubled Don Draper, acknowledged Michaels’ influence in helping him showcase a different side of his artistry

one that had largely remained hidden from mainstream audiences.

Hamm Reflects on His Career Shift

While speaking with reporters on Friday, January 31, after being honored as the Hasty Pudding Man of the Year at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hamm took a moment to appreciate Michaels’ role in shaping his post-Mad Men career. 

According to People magazine, the actor reflected on how the hit AMC series had catapulted him into fame but also led to typecasting, with many of the roles he was offered being variations of his Mad Men persona.

Hamm described the pattern he noticed after the show’s immense success, explaining that many of the roles coming his way featured characters who were moody, introspective, and often gazing out of windows into dark cityscapes—echoing the signature imagery of Don Draper. While he was grateful for the opportunities, he realized he didn’t want to be confined to the same kind of roles for the rest of his career.

“I figured I would do that for my day job,” Hamm shared. “But I think there’s more stuff out [there] to do.”

Lorne Michaels’ Influence on Hamm’s Career

It was at this point in his career that Lorne Michaels stepped in and provided Hamm with an opportunity to break free from the mold. The SNL creator invited him to guest host the legendary sketch comedy show, giving him a platform to display his comedic chops. This experience helped Hamm redefine his image and prove that he wasn’t just a dramatic actor but also had a natural flair for comedy.

“Most of the people who knew me before they knew me for Mad Men knew that was the predominant side of me,” Hamm explained. However, mainstream audiences were largely unaware of this talent until Michaels gave him a shot.

Hosting SNL not only showcased Hamm’s comedic abilities but also led to other significant opportunities in the comedy world. He credited Michaels for opening doors that ultimately led him to roles in projects created by comedy heavyweights like Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. “So I’ll be forever grateful to [Michaels] for that,” Hamm stated.

Reflecting on his time on Mad Men, Hamm acknowledged how significant the show had been in his life but also noted how much time had passed since its conclusion.

“It will be a decade since we wrapped the show and two decades since we began the venture,” Hamm noted. “So it’s fading in the rearview, but it’s still very prevalent in my life.”

Despite the lasting impact of Mad Men, Hamm has successfully carved out a diverse career, balancing dramatic roles with comedic performances. His ability to shift between genres has allowed him to continue evolving as an actor, avoiding the pitfalls of being permanently typecast.
