Robin Roberts, the well-known anchor of Good Morning America, has given fans a rare glimpse into her private life with her wife, Amber Laign.
During a segment on the morning show on January 22, Roberts, 64, shared insights into their living arrangement,
explaining that while they live separately, it is due to work obligations rather than choice.
“It’s not for everyone,” Roberts admitted. “Amber and I [live separately], not by choice, but because of the work schedule.
But there’s a lot of trust there. And there’s some people from my past I would not have done this with.”
Despite living apart, the couple remains deeply committed to each other. Roberts resides in a luxurious $2.5 million apartment in Manhattan, a convenient distance from the Good Morning America studios.
Meanwhile, Laign, 50, has her own home on the Upper West Side, just a short 10-minute journey from Roberts’ residence.
A Relationship Strengthened by Challenges
While their careers necessitate separate living spaces, Roberts and Laign have shared significant moments of closeness, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, they spent an extended period together at their Connecticut estate, a stunning 0.92-acre property in Farmington, where they would later exchange vows in 2023 after nearly two decades together.
Reflecting on their time spent in isolation, Roberts revealed how the experience transformed their relationship.
“We spent more time together this year than in the previous 15 years combined. We’ve never been stronger!” she told People in April 2021. “I remember when I packed up part of my dressing room here [in New York City] and headed home to Connecticut a year ago [when the pandemic started]. I’m glad I packed a lot of patience.”
A Love Story Years in the Making
Roberts and Laign’s love story began in 2005 when they were introduced through a blind date. For years, the couple kept their relationship out of the public eye. It wasn’t until 2013 that Roberts publicly acknowledged their romance, coming out as a lesbian in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Their enduring bond has seen them through difficult times, particularly regarding health battles. In February 2022, Roberts shared on Instagram that Laign had been diagnosed with breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor herself, Roberts stood firmly by her wife’s side throughout her treatment.
“She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges, like my journey with cancer,” Roberts said at the time. “It’s my turn now to be there for her like she was for me.”
After completing radiation treatment in July 2022, Laign and Roberts decided it was time to take the next step in their relationship. In early 2023, Roberts excitedly announced that they planned to tie the knot in a meaningful ceremony surrounded by loved ones.
A Unique Engagement and Wedding
The couple’s engagement was anything but conventional, perfectly fitting their easygoing dynamic. Instead of a traditional proposal, the decision to marry came in a casual yet heartfelt moment.
“Now, looking back, it was pretty fitting for us to not have a down on one knee [proposal] and one person doing it and who was going to propose,” Roberts shared. “It was just us hanging out in our little hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot and putting calamari rings on each other and saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.’”
Their wedding in 2023 marked a beautiful new chapter in their lives, reinforcing the strength of their relationship despite their unique living situation. While they may not share a home full-time, their unwavering trust and love for each other continue to define their enduring partnership.
