Chevy Chase and Bill Murray got into a fierce argument at Chris Rock’s birthday bash: “They almost fought outside…” What sparked the feud?

After decades of tension, comedy legends Chevy Chase and Bill Murray have seemingly buried the hatchet.

The two former Saturday Night Live stars were seen together at Chris Rock’s 60th birthday party in New York City on Saturday,

just a day before both attended the SNL 50th Anniversary Special.

The sight of the duo sharing a friendly moment marked a surprising and welcome reunion, considering their well-known and longstanding feud.

Chase, now 81, posted photos from the celebration, showing him smiling and posing with a variety of star-studded guests, including Murray, 74.

In one particularly striking image, Chase has his arm around Murray’s shoulder, both of them grinning widely for the camera.

This image marks a significant moment, as it was the first time the two have appeared publicly together in such a warm and friendly way in years.

At the party, which was hosted by Guy Oseary, Chase mingled with several other familiar faces from the world of comedy and entertainment. Alongside Murray, the guest list included fellow SNL alums Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, and Jon Lovitz, as well as other stars like Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Dave Chappelle, and Steven Spielberg. Chase, who attended the event with his wife Jayni, shared his appreciation for the gathering, noting the immense talent in attendance. He also took a moment to remember his late friend, comedian Richard Pryor, saying he wished Pryor had been there to join in the festivities.

The reconciliation between Chase and Murray is particularly noteworthy given their famously strained relationship. The two had an infamous falling-out during their time on SNL in the late 1970s. During the filming of an episode in 1978, Murray reportedly made a comment about Chase’s personal life, mocking his tumultuous marriage at the time. In retaliation, Chase mocked Murray’s appearance, leading to a physical altercation between the two in John Belushi’s dressing room. As Chase recounted in a 2010 interview with Esquire, the two tried to fight, but the situation ended in chaos when Belushi inadvertently became involved. “We tried, but Belushi got in the middle and we both ended up hitting John,” Chase explained.

Despite their rocky past, it was clear that the two comedians have moved past their differences. The following day, both attended the SNL 50th Anniversary Special at Rockefeller Center, which reunited current and former cast members of the iconic sketch comedy show. During the special, Murray made a playful reference to Chase in a star-studded “Weekend Update” sketch. Ranking the best Update hosts, Murray affectionately mentioned Chase, saying, “Let’s face it. ‘Weekend Update’ would simply not exist without him,” before humorously placing him at No. 4 on the list.

While their reconciliation might seem surprising given their previous history, it shows how time can heal old wounds, especially between individuals who share such a rich history together. Chase, who was a cast member from 1975 to 1976, has had a complex relationship with the show over the years, often criticizing the newer generations of SNL. In a 2018 interview, he expressed his displeasure with the modern direction of the show, calling it “the worst humor in the world.” His critique extended to the 2022 film Saturday Night, which dramatized the early days of the show’s creation, where Chase made his feelings about the portrayal of SNL clear, calling it “embarrassing.”

However, his attendance at both Rock’s birthday party and the SNL anniversary special suggests a shift in attitude, at least in relation to Murray. The two seem to have let go of their past animosities, coming together not just for the reunion but also for the shared love of the show that made them both household names.

As SNL celebrates its 50th anniversary, the appearance of two of its earliest stars—Chase and Murray—together, marks a full-circle moment for the show’s legacy. Their reconciliation, although long overdue, shows that even the deepest rifts can be healed, and that time, laughter, and shared history can help to mend broken bonds. Whether this marks the start of a renewed friendship or just a one-time gesture, it’s a moment that fans of both comedians, and of SNL, will cherish.
