Jenna Bush Hager admitted that growing up as the daughter of a former U.S. president caused her and her sister hardship: “If I had the option, I wouldn’t pick him as my dad…”

Jenna Bush Hager is no stranger to the term “nepo baby,” and she’s well aware of the assumptions that come with it.

As the daughter of former President George W. Bush and the granddaughter of late President George H.W. Bush,

Jenna and her twin sister, Barbara, have spent their lives under public scrutiny.

However, rather than shy away from the label, Jenna recently addressed it head-on, emphasizing how it has driven both her and Barbara to work harder to prove themselves.

Speaking on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on February 19, Jenna candidly admitted that her own children have even used the phrase around her.

“Sometimes my children say ‘nepo babies,’ and I’m like, ‘I kind of am one, kids,’” Jenna revealed during the discussion.

The conversation about nepotism in Hollywood has been a hot topic in recent years, particularly since New York magazine dubbed 2022 “the year of the nepo baby.” The term refers to children of famous individuals who may have benefited from their family’s influence in securing professional opportunities. While many of these children follow in their parents’ footsteps, Jenna and Barbara have taken different career paths, proving their success is based on more than just their last name.

The Pressure to Prove Themselves

Jenna, 43, acknowledged that there’s a perception that people want “nepo babies” to fail, making it even more important for her and Barbara to work hard and forge their own identities.

“I think it’s hard because people want (nepo babies) to fail,” Jenna admitted. “Barbara and I are serious workaholics, and I’ve tried to figure out why. And I think it’s because we want to prove to people that it isn’t always easy, that we work really hard.”

Jenna’s guest co-host, Justin Sylvester from E! News, chimed in, agreeing that children of famous parents often face an uphill battle when it comes to public perception. He referenced actor Patrick Schwarzenegger’s recent role in HBO’s The White Lotus, noting that nepo babies often feel they must work “twice as hard” because the public is waiting for them to fail.

As Sylvester made this point, Jenna silently pointed to herself, reinforcing her agreement with the sentiment.

Forging Their Own Paths

Unlike many nepo babies who enter the same industry as their famous parents, Jenna and Barbara have taken different routes. Rather than stepping into politics, they have each established their own careers in completely separate fields.

Barbara has made a name for herself as an activist, author, and mother, focusing on philanthropy and social impact. She co-founded Global Health Corps, an organization dedicated to improving health equity worldwide.

Jenna, on the other hand, has built a successful career in media. She co-hosts the fourth hour of TODAY alongside Hoda Kotb and has also become a major figure in the publishing world. Her Read with Jenna book club has been instrumental in spotlighting authors and promoting literacy, and she even launched her own book imprint with Random House.

Despite their famous lineage, both sisters have worked hard to carve out spaces for themselves outside the political realm, demonstrating that their achievements stem from dedication rather than privilege alone.

Balancing Hard Work and Recognition

Jenna also reflected on how her determination to prove herself has shaped her work ethic. She acknowledged that she has spent years striving to show the world that she is more than just the daughter and granddaughter of former presidents.

“I think if you ask people around (TODAY), they’ll say that (I work hard),” Jenna noted. “That’s important, and I’m glad I work really hard, and I’m glad that I have the family that I have, but also I need to at some point be like, ‘OK, I did it. I proved it.’”

Her words suggest that while she takes pride in her dedication, there may come a time when she allows herself to step back and acknowledge that she has earned her success.

Public Perception of Nepotism

The discussion surrounding nepotism in Hollywood and other industries remains a heated topic. Some argue that nepo babies have undeniable advantages that give them a head start, while others believe that their success is a result of personal talent and effort.

In Jenna’s case, her career in television and publishing was not handed to her—she has actively worked to establish herself, using her platform to create meaningful content. Similarly, Barbara has remained dedicated to social activism and philanthropy, showing that success does not always come from following a predetermined path.

Ultimately, Jenna and Barbara’s journey highlights the complexities of being in the public eye as children of well-known figures. While their family name may open doors, their hard work and dedication are what have kept them moving forward.

As Jenna continues to thrive in her career, her reflections on being a “nepo baby” serve as a reminder that legacy alone does not guarantee success—it takes perseverance and passion to truly make a mark.
