Daniel Craig sparks controversy by warning “James Bond” could be D.E.S.T.R.O.Y.E.D under Amazon’s oversight: “Everything I built might fall apart…”

Daniel Craig, the man who embodied James Bond for over a decade, has spoken out about the major shake-up in the 007 franchise following the unexpected announcement

that longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have ceded creative control of the iconic spy series to Amazon.

Despite the massive change, Craig remains supportive of the duo,

who have played a pivotal role in shaping the Bond films since taking over from their father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, in 1995.

In a statement to Variety, the 56-year-old actor shared his admiration for the pair.

“My respect, admiration, and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished,” he said.

“I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement, and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.”

A Historic Shift in the Bond Franchise

For over six decades, the Broccoli family has held the reins of the James Bond film series, dating back to 1962’s Dr. No, the first cinematic adaptation of Ian Fleming’s legendary MI6 agent. Broccoli and Wilson’s decision to step back marks the end of an era for the franchise.

Broccoli, 64, explained that the move was driven by a desire to focus on other projects. “I feel it is time to focus on my other projects,” she said in her statement.

While Broccoli and Wilson will remain co-owners of the Bond brand, Amazon will now have the final say on creative decisions. This transition comes after the tech giant’s acquisition of MGM, Bond’s longtime distributor, in 2022 for a staggering $8.4 billion. Reports indicate that Amazon spent an additional $1 billion to secure control over the franchise’s future direction.

Craig’s Legacy as Bond

Craig, who starred as James Bond in five films—starting with Casino Royale in 2006 and ending with No Time To Die in 2021—played a major role in revitalizing the series. His portrayal of the suave yet gritty secret agent received critical acclaim and helped push the franchise into a new era of realism and emotional depth.

His final outing as Bond, No Time To Die, was a box office success, grossing $774 million worldwide despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film served as a dramatic conclusion to Craig’s tenure, as his version of Bond met a definitive end—something no previous Bond actor had experienced on screen.

With Amazon now in charge, fans are left wondering what the future holds for the beloved franchise. No official announcements have been made regarding the next installment or who will take over the iconic role.

Broccoli’s Ongoing Work in Theater

Though Broccoli is stepping away from Bond, she remains active in the entertainment industry, particularly in theater production. She previously worked with Craig outside of the 007 films, producing the 2022 Broadway revival of Macbeth, in which he starred.

She has also been involved in several other acclaimed theater projects, including Prima Facie with Jodie Comer and the Tony Award-winning musical The Band’s Visit. This season, she is working on Buena Vista Social Club, further demonstrating her commitment to storytelling beyond the world of Bond.

What’s Next for Bond?

The question on everyone’s mind is: What’s next for James Bond? With no official plans or casting details announced for the 26th Bond film, speculation is running rampant about what direction Amazon will take the franchise.

Some fans worry that the transition to Amazon’s control could alter the classic feel of the series, while others are excited about the potential for fresh ideas and innovation. One thing is certain—whoever dons the tuxedo next will have enormous shoes to fill.

As the Bond franchise enters a new era, Daniel Craig has gracefully bid farewell, while Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson step into new ventures. Now, all eyes are on Amazon to see what the future holds for cinema’s most famous spy.
