Denise Richards Reveals She Was Sexually Harassed Early in Her Career — Why She Stayed Silent

Denise Richards is no longer holding back. The Wild Things actress, now 54, has opened up about a painful experience from her early years in Hollywood, 

revealing that she was sexually harassed at the start of her career. In a recent interview with People, 

Richards admitted that she remained silent about the incident for fear of being blacklisted from the industry she was so passionate about.

The Fear of Speaking Out

Reflecting on the difficult time, Richards shared how vulnerable she felt when faced with such a distressing situation. 

“This was the career I wanted to do. To be told that you’re never going to work in an industry that you are passionate about, it’s a hard thing,” she explained. The fear of losing opportunities kept her from coming forward, a reality many actresses in Hollywood faced before movements like #MeToo encouraged survivors to share their experiences.

Richards, who launched her acting career in the early 1990s, quickly became a recognizable name in Hollywood. Richards takes great pride in the confidence her daughters exude, something she wishes she had when she was younger. “I look at my daughters doing our show and being such strong women,” she said. “If I had that, I think I would’ve been able to handle it a little differently.”

She admires their ability to stand up for themselves and speak their minds, something she struggled with early in her career. “I wish I had the confidence that they have because I would never be able to stand out for myself the way they do, and I’m so proud of them. I’m so proud that they say what’s on their mind.”

Richards also reflected on how her personality played a role in her silence during the early years of her career. “I was such a people pleaser,” she admitted, noting that she often put others’ needs and expectations above her own.

Seeing her daughters’ strength, however, has been an eye-opening experience. “And I love that my girls, this early in their career, that they’re able to [speak up],” she said. “Sometimes I’m like, ‘You might want to tone it down,’ but for the most part, I’m glad that they’re able to say [what’s on their mind]. I wish I was able to back then.”

Richards’ return to reality television with Denise Richards & Her Wild Things promises to give fans an intimate look at her life. One of the most anticipated moments from the show is a rare on-screen interaction between Richards and her ex-husband, Charlie Sheen.

During a recent appearance on Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast, Richards teased that Sheen, 59, will make a surprising appearance in the series. “Nobody has ever seen Charlie and I after our divorce sitting in a room talking,” she revealed. “I think that’s one of the things that I love that we were able to capture—us having that moment of sharing that.”
