Brian Geraghty & Sebastian Roché Reveal What It’s Really Like Working with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren

With 1923 proving to be another major success under Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, 

fans are eagerly anticipating the second season of the Golden Globe-nominated series. 

Led by Hollywood legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the show continues to explore the challenges faced by the Dutton family, navigating the struggles of Prohibition, 

the Great Depression, and a looming war in the Montana highlands.

Ahead of the highly anticipated second season, HELLO! caught up with 1923 stars Brian Geraghty and Sebastian Roché, 

who offered exclusive insight into what it’s like working alongside two of the biggest names in the industry.

Working with Hollywood Icons

Brian Geraghty, who plays Zane Davis—the loyal ranch foreman of the Dutton family—has had the privilege of sharing many scenes with Ford and Mirren. Despite their legendary status, he revealed that the atmosphere on set was lighthearted and encouraging.

“It’s funny. Obviously, they’re both incredible actors and icons, so you have to work past that,” Geraghty said. “But once you do—which only takes a year or two… No, it takes you your first scene,” he joked.

Geraghty explained that both Ford and Mirren approach their work with professionalism and a desire to create the best possible result. “They’re actors just like us, and they want the best possible product,” he said. “They’re in there with you, just working, and that really makes it easier for all of us.”

One of the most surprising aspects, according to Geraghty, was how much fun the legendary duo bring to the set. “They’re just fun,” he shared. “They set the tone with fun. They’re like, ‘We’re playing, so let’s have fun, let’s work hard.’ They show up prepared, but the most important thing for them is to have fun.”

A Supportive and Motivating Environment

The positive energy that Ford and Mirren bring to 1923 has had a profound effect on the entire cast. According to Geraghty, their presence on set made everyone more motivated.

“That was really great for all of us. We were all able to take a deep breath after day one,” he explained. “We all really wanted to be there. We all wanted to be a part of this, and that makes you work 30% harder than you normally would.”

Even though 1923 explores heavy themes, from economic hardships to survival in the rugged Montana wilderness, the cast’s dynamic behind the scenes is one of camaraderie and mutual respect.

Sebastian Roché’s Admiration for Ford and Mirren

Unlike Geraghty, Sebastian Roché—who portrays the ruthless Father Renaud—does not share many scenes with Ford and Mirren. However, that didn’t stop him from taking every opportunity to observe them in action.

“Even though my character, as you saw in season one, doesn’t really interact with Harrison and Helen, on my days off, I would actually go to set to watch them because these are icons, these are people I’ve admired all my life,” Roché revealed.

As a longtime fan of the two actors, he found it invaluable to see them at work. “I would go to the set just to watch them and to see how professional, how passionate, and how caring they are about the crew. It basically imbued the whole set, so I felt I was enveloped by the umbrella of Harrison and Helen,” he added.

Returning to the World of 1923

For both actors, stepping back into their respective roles for season two was an easy transition. Geraghty humorously noted that his preparation was minimal: “They told me to grow a beard, that was all I had to do! And then I was back in it.”

Once filming dates were confirmed, he focused on rewatching the first season and reviewing scripts. “Then it was like you’d never left, and things [were back] per usual,” he said.

Roché echoed this sentiment, explaining that his costume alone helped him reenter character. “It was quite easy to get back to. As soon as I put the cassock on—because that’s the only piece of costume that I wear—I instantly got back into the character,” he shared.

He credited Taylor Sheridan’s writing for making the transition seamless. “Taylor Sheridan’s writing really enables you to get back into it right away, so it was as if I’d never left,” Roché explained.

With 1923 returning for its second season, anticipation is high. The show has already established itself as a gripping addition to the Yellowstone franchise, and the chemistry between the cast members, along with the leadership of Ford and Mirren, ensures that the upcoming season will be just as compelling as the first.
