Matthew Lawrence spoke out, shedding light on a truly embarrassing experience from Ryan Reynolds’ past in the 2000s: “He found himself repeatedly getting removed from film sets during shoots…”

Matthew Lawrence recently shared an intriguing account from his early career,

revealing that Ryan Reynolds was a difficult co-star to work with during the filming of the 1998 film Boltneck.

The Boy Meets World actor spoke candidly on his “Brotherly Love Podcast,” where he reflected on the challenges of working with a young Reynolds,

who at the time was beginning to make a name for himself in Hollywood.

In his discussion, Lawrence, 45, recounted how Reynolds, 48, often clashed with the producers and the director over creative differences during the production of Boltneck.

The film, which had a modern Frankenstein-like premise, saw Reynolds playing a character who is bullied, killed, and then brought back to life,

while Lawrence played his quirky sidekick, a “science nerd” named Frank Stein.

According to Lawrence, Reynolds’ behavior on set did not always align with the director’s vision. “He’d walk out — just kind of wanted to do his thing, and the producers would get really upset,” Lawrence said. The actor elaborated on how the producers were critical of Reynolds’ approach, especially regarding his portrayal of the character. “They even told him, ‘Ryan, this is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do. You can’t impersonate somebody, you gotta do your own thing.’”

While Reynolds was known for his humor and energetic personality, Lawrence explained that his improvisational style on set didn’t always match the film’s intended tone. “He was trying to ‘Deadpool’ the script,” Lawrence remarked, referencing Reynolds’ later role in the Deadpool franchise, where his snarky, irreverent style became iconic. Lawrence went on to explain that the film’s producers were hoping for a more serious, sci-fi thriller vibe akin to Donnie Darko, but Reynolds’ comedic instincts clashed with that vision.

Lawrence added that the crew had high hopes for Reynolds when he joined the film but that they ultimately became disillusioned due to his contentious behavior. He said, “We had so much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere,” laughing off the irony given Reynolds’ rise to global stardom in the years that followed. The Hot Chick star also shared that the filmmakers had written off Reynolds’ potential at the time due to his disagreements on set, claiming that they blamed the film’s lackluster success on Reynolds’ behavior.

Interestingly, Lawrence revealed that he was privy to a meeting between Reynolds and the director about his on-set conduct. “This crew, I think, had just been nominated for an Oscar, so they were kind of a big deal at that moment. Talk about frustrations on set with actors,” Lawrence recalled. Despite the tense atmosphere, Lawrence emphasized that Reynolds was still figuring things out at the time and suggested that he had since matured both professionally and personally.

The story of Reynolds’ early struggles is particularly striking given his tremendous success today. After Boltneck, Reynolds went on to become one of Hollywood’s highest-paid and most beloved actors, known for his roles in films like Deadpool, The Proposal, and Free Guy. Lawrence, too, found success, but his story offers an interesting glimpse into the challenges that many actors face in their early careers.

The Boltneck shoot wasn’t the only time Reynolds found himself in controversy, however. Recently, Reynolds and his wife, actress Blake Lively, have been embroiled in a legal dispute with director Justin Baldoni. Baldoni, who worked with the couple on the upcoming film It Ends With Us, accused the couple of trying to take creative control of the project. The feud reached a boiling point when Baldoni alleged that Reynolds had aggressively confronted him on set over comments made about Lively’s appearance. The legal battle has captured public attention, drawing parallels to Reynolds’ past behavior on set.

As for Lawrence, he acknowledged that Reynolds’ behavior on Boltneck might have been a product of youth and inexperience. Reflecting on their past interactions, Lawrence said, “He obviously matured as a human being.” While Reynolds may have had a rocky start, it’s clear that both actors have found their footing in Hollywood, with long and successful careers ahead.

Despite the challenges on set during Boltneck, it’s clear that Lawrence holds no ill will toward Reynolds. Instead, he sees the situation as a part of the journey that every actor undergoes as they grow professionally. For fans, hearing these behind-the-scenes stories from the actors themselves adds a layer of depth to their understanding of the industry and the way stars evolve over time.
