Savannah Guthrie recently revealed that her love story with husband Michael Feldman had a dramatic twist before their engagement. 

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the TODAY show anchor shared that she actually broke up with Feldman on the very day he planned to propose.

The couple had been dating for over five years, and Guthrie admitted she was growing impatient, wondering if marriage was ever in their future. 

During a romantic getaway to Turks and Caicos, she decided she couldn’t wait any longer and told Feldman it was time to part ways. 

What she didn’t know at the time was that he had an engagement ring in his pocket, ready to propose later that day.

The Unexpected Breakup Before the Proposal

Guthrie met Feldman, a former Democratic political adviser, at his 40th birthday party, which she attended as a guest of a friend. The two quickly connected and began dating after he reached out via email a few days later. However, after dating for five and a half years without a proposal, Guthrie started to question whether their relationship was heading toward marriage.

She explained on the talk show that her own mother had encouraged her to make a decision, advising, “You need to either do it or don’t.” Feeling that time was slipping away, Guthrie decided to take matters into her own hands. While in Turks and Caicos, she told Feldman she loved him but couldn’t continue waiting indefinitely. “Let’s just say goodbye. Let’s just let each other go,” she recalled saying to him.

Despite her emotional decision, Feldman urged her to still enjoy their vacation together. Guthrie described feeling “weepy” throughout the day, second-guessing whether breaking up was the right choice.

A Surprise Proposal at Sunset

What Guthrie didn’t realize was that Feldman had secretly planned to propose during the trip. He had not told anyone—not friends, not family—so he easily could have walked away without revealing his intentions. But instead of giving up, he made a last-minute decision that would change everything.

As the sun began to set, Feldman suggested they enjoy some champagne that the resort had sent them. Guthrie, believing they were going their separate ways, wanted to have one last drink together. She had no idea what was coming next.

As they sat down, Feldman got down on one knee and popped the question. Guthrie admitted she was so stunned that she didn’t immediately understand what was happening. “I honestly didn’t understand that was what the question was,” she said. But once it sank in, she was overwhelmed with joy. “It was so shocking to me and I was so happy.”

One year after their engagement, Guthrie and Feldman tied the knot in March 2014 just outside her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. Their wedding was a beautiful celebration of their love, marking the official start of their life together as husband and wife.

Five months later, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Vale Guthrie Feldman, on August 13, 2014. Two years later, their family grew again when their son, Charles Max, was born on December 8, 2016.

Looking back, Guthrie now laughs about the dramatic way their engagement unfolded. While she once feared the relationship was at a standstill, Feldman was secretly planning the big moment all along. Their story is a testament to patience, love, and the unexpected ways life can surprise you.
