The tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs have left many unanswered questions.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Hackman and his wife were found deceased at their home on Sunset Trail. 

Although investigators initially considered the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, firefighters and utility workers reported no evidence of a leak. The New Mexico Gas Company inspected the home’s gas lines and found no irregularities.

A search warrant obtained by authorities reveals that a detective raised concerns over the unusual nature of the deaths. The warrant describes several unsettling details, including the fact that the home’s front door was found open and unsecured. Additionally, while one dog was found dead inside a closet, two other dogs were discovered alive—one indoors and the other outside the property.

Details of the Discovery

Authorities arrived at the residence after a welfare check was requested. Hackman’s body was found fully dressed in a separate room near the kitchen, with his sunglasses lying beside him, suggesting a sudden collapse.

His wife, Betsy, was discovered on the floor of the bathroom, positioned on her right side near the countertop. A black space heater was located close to her, raising speculation that it may have fallen if she had collapsed unexpectedly. Next to Betsy’s body was an open prescription bottle, with pills scattered on the counter.

Disturbingly, Betsy’s remains showed significant signs of decomposition. Investigators noted facial bloating and mummification of her hands and feet, suggesting she had been deceased for a longer period than initially suspected.

Nearby, a deceased German Shepherd was found inside a closet about 10 to 15 feet from Betsy’s body. However, two other dogs were still alive—one found in the house and another outside—adding to the puzzling nature of the case.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that the case remains under active investigation. While authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time, the unusual details surrounding the deaths have prompted a deeper inquiry.

Investigators are examining the presence of the scattered pills, the possibility of a medical emergency, and the exact timeline of events leading up to the discovery of the bodies. Toxicology reports and autopsy results are expected to provide more insight into the cause of death.
