Craig Melvin revealed that he is CLOSE TO BEING FIRED because of a “minor provision” in his agreement with the higher-ups.

Craig Melvin, a familiar face on Today alongside Savannah Guthrie, shared an exciting update about his upcoming assignment during Thursday’s broadcast.

As he chatted with Guthrie and Carson Daly at the start of the first hour, the trio turned their attention to the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games.

Viewers were treated to a glimpse of the snowy venue before Savannah made a surprising announcement

—Craig would be leaving next week to get an early look at the preparations in Italy.

“He’s a giver,” Savannah quipped, teasing her co-host. “He’s gonna scope out the scene for us next week.”

Craig confirmed the news, replying, “[I’m] Taking one for the team. Going to Italy next week and gonna give you a bit of a preview.”

As the discussion continued, Carson Daly asked Craig if he was ready for the trip. “Are you packed and ready to go?” he inquired. Craig admitted that packing was still on his to-do list but assured them he would get to it soon. “I’ll be packing this weekend… before the Super Bowl,” he revealed.

Craig’s love for sports, particularly football, has been evident on the show. He and Savannah have had their fair share of competitive moments, especially as their favorite teams went head-to-head in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. Savannah is a passionate Philadelphia Eagles fan, while Craig supports the Washington Commanders. Their football rivalry added excitement to the show as they placed a friendly bet on the playoff game.

After days of banter and anticipation, the Eagles secured their spot in the big game against the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result, Craig had to fulfill the terms of their bet, and his punishment was both hilarious and memorable—a temporary tattoo of Savannah’s face on his neck. True to his word, Craig showed off the tattoo on air, much to the amusement of viewers and his fellow co-hosts.

Aside from his upcoming trip, Craig has been adjusting to his new role on Today after taking over from Hoda Kotb. His enthusiasm and charisma have been well received by fans, though he did have a minor on-air slip-up recently. As he wrapped up the Third Hour, Craig mistakenly referred to the Fourth Hour segment as “Today with Hoda & Jenna,” before quickly correcting himself. “Oops, force of habit, Jenna and Friends,” he said with a laugh.

Meanwhile, Jenna Bush Hager has been co-hosting the final segment of Today with different guest co-anchors each week, welcoming several notable personalities, including Eva Longoria and Scarlett Johansson. While there had been speculation about who would permanently fill Hoda’s spot alongside Jenna, no official announcement has been made.

As Craig prepares to embark on his assignment in Italy, he continues to bring his signature energy and humor to the show. Fans are eager to see his exclusive preview of the 2026 Winter Olympics and look forward to his return to the Today studio with firsthand insights from his trip.

Despite the change in hosting dynamics, Today remains as entertaining and engaging as ever, with Craig, Savannah, and the rest of the team keeping viewers informed and entertained. Whether it’s playful sports rivalries, on-air blunders, or exciting new assignments, Craig Melvin is proving to be an invaluable member of the Today family.
