On TODAY, Savannah Guthrie becomes emotional as she recalls the scary moment that eventually caused her to split from her first husband: “It all started that night…”

Savannah Guthrie is a familiar face to millions as she delivers the news each morning on Today.

While she is known for her professionalism on screen, she occasionally gives fans a glimpse into her personal life.

At 53, she is happily married with children, but her journey to this point has not been without its challenges.

In a rare and candid interview, Guthrie opened up about a painful chapter in her past—her divorce nearly two decades ago.

She also shared how that experience shaped her views on love, family, and motherhood.

A Painful Divorce and Fears for the Future

Before meeting her current husband, Guthrie was married to Mark Orchard from 2005 to 2009.

Their marriage was short-lived, and their divorce left her questioning what the future would hold.

“When I was 36, I got divorced,” she recalled. “I wasn’t married long. That was a huge disappointment. I was pretty sure that I had lost my opportunity [to become a mom] and more or less ruined my life.”

For Guthrie, family had always been a priority. While she had built an incredible career in journalism, she deeply desired love, marriage, and motherhood. At the time of her divorce, she feared those dreams were slipping away.

“All I ever really wanted was to fall in love, be a mom, and have a family,” she admitted. “I don’t know if it’s acceptable to admit these days, but that’s kind of how I was. I wanted to do something important and meaningful, but I really wanted a family.”

Finding Love Again and Becoming a Mother

Guthrie’s worries about the future proved to be unfounded. In 2014, she married Michael Feldman, a political consultant, and the couple built a life together. Their relationship brought her the happiness she once feared she would never find again.

Motherhood, too, became a reality for Guthrie—just later than she had once imagined. She welcomed her first child at 42 and her second at 44. Now, as a mom of two, she often reflects on the timing of her journey and offers words of encouragement to other women who fear that time may not be on their side.

“You just have to trust that things tend to happen at the right time and maybe not on your schedule,” she shared. “I could never tell someone, ‘You’ll get to have babies too at 44.’ That was a miracle, and I recognize that. But why not hope? Why not have faith?”

For Guthrie, faith played a crucial role in her path to love and family. She drew inspiration from the Spanish language, noting that the word for “wait” and “hope” is the same.

“I think a lot about how waiting and hoping are kind of the same thing,” she explained. “If you can find it within you to spend that time waiting with joy and expectation—even if you don’t get every single thing you want—you will have spent your time wisely.”

Keeping Family Life Private

Despite her openness about her past struggles, Guthrie is mindful of how much she shares about her family on Today. While some of her colleagues frequently discuss their personal lives on air, she takes a more reserved approach.

“If I was on [Today with Jenna & Friends], I’d probably be saying all kinds of things about my husband! We don’t do as much talking about our personal lives on our show,” she noted.

Her decision to keep some details private is partly out of respect for her husband and children.

“Apparently, my husband doesn’t love when I discuss his snoring,” she said with a laugh. “Now my kids are old enough that [they could] hear from a friend, ‘Oh, your mom said this about you,’ so I try to be careful.”

Guthrie, like many parents, is navigating the tricky stage where her children find her presence embarrassing.

“My daughter’s at an age where everything is embarrassing. My mere existence is mortifying,” she joked.

A Story of Resilience and Hope

Savannah Guthrie’s journey is one of resilience, hope, and faith in life’s timing. From the heartbreak of divorce to the joys of finding love again and becoming a mother, she has embraced each chapter with grace.

Her story serves as a reminder that setbacks are not the end—they are simply a detour to something even greater. Whether it’s love, family, or personal fulfillment, Guthrie’s experience proves that sometimes, the best things in life come when we least expect them.
