Willie Geist is no stranger to the Today show audience, often stepping in for hosting duties. 

But his recent on-air exchange with Jenna Bush Hager left him feeling more flustered than expected. During the March 4 episode of Today, 

Bush Hager playfully gave Geist an unexpected new title—one that made him visibly uneasy.

The Moment That Made Geist Squirm

Since Hoda Kotb temporarily stepped away from her regular hosting duties, Geist has been making more appearances alongside Bush Hager on Today. 

During a discussion on the show, Bush Hager revealed that the Today team had given Geist a new nickname, 

similar to how actor Pedro Pascal has been dubbed “the internet’s boyfriend.”

“Our team has pegged you now as ‘morning TV’s boyfriend,’” Bush Hager declared.

Geist, clearly caught off guard, let out a groan before responding, “Makes me very uncomfortable.”

The Viral Interaction with Heather McMahan

The conversation between Bush Hager and Geist stemmed from a previous moment on the show involving comedian and podcaster Heather McMahan. McMahan had been a guest co-host on Today, and when Geist stopped by to greet her and Bush Hager in their dressing room, her reaction quickly became a viral moment.

In a clip shared by Today on February 27, Geist casually walked in to say hello, and McMahan immediately became flustered. Looking at him in surprise, she blurted out, “Oh my god, I’m wearing my slippers!” Her sudden nervousness was evident as she tried to compose herself in front of Geist.

Sensing her reaction, Geist jokingly asked, “Are we an item?” to which McMahan quickly responded, “Yeah, we kind of are.”

Bush Hager brought up the moment during the March 4 episode, explaining to Geist that McMahan, who is usually outgoing and confident, seemed to freeze up in his presence.

“She saw you, and she just shriveled up inside,” Bush Hager teased.

Geist’s Surprise at the Public Reaction

What made things even more surprising for Geist was the overwhelming response from viewers. Bush Hager read out several fan comments from the viral video, most of which gushed over Geist’s charm. While McMahan’s reaction was endearing on its own, fans couldn’t get enough of the lighthearted moment, leading to the Today team jokingly bestowing Geist with his new “morning TV’s boyfriend” title.

Geist, however, remained baffled by all the attention. He later admitted that he hadn’t realized the interaction had been recorded until he got home and his wife informed him about it.

“I don’t even quite know what it means to be morning TV’s boyfriend,” he admitted to Bush Hager. “I guess it’s an honor to be in the company of Pedro Pascal.”

A New Title for the Today Star

Despite Geist’s modesty, the playful nickname has gained traction, and Today viewers have embraced the idea of him being morning television’s most charming and likable personality. Though he may not be entirely comfortable with the title, the lighthearted moment between him and McMahan has only added to his appeal.

While he may not have set out to become Today’s answer to Pedro Pascal, it looks like Willie Geist is winning over audiences in ways he never expected—whether he likes it or not.
