Not only GMA3, but the main Good Morning America show is also going through a major restructuring as executives reveal the next individual to be let go from the program.

The future of Good Morning America is taking shape as ABC News undergoes a significant restructuring.

The network is making major changes to its morning show lineup, affecting both GMA and its third-hour segment, GMA3.

As part of this shift, ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic recently issued a memo to staff outlining the adjustments and the impact they will have on employees and programming.

ABC News President Confirms Major Shakeups

In the internal memo, Karamehmedovic addressed ABC News staff, emphasizing the network’s commitment to streamlining operations to remain a leader in broadcast journalism.

He acknowledged that while these changes were necessary to strengthen ABC’s position, they also involved difficult decisions, including staff reductions.

“As we’ve often talked about, streamlining our operation to best serve our viewers and continue to position ourselves as a leading news organization has been a goal for some time,” he wrote.

The memo went on to highlight that rethinking the company’s workflow and structure was essential for its long-term success. However, the restructuring would unfortunately result in job losses. “These decisions are incredibly challenging and today will undoubtedly be difficult for our organization,” Karamehmedovic stated.

Despite the upheaval, he expressed his gratitude for the network’s dedicated team and their continued efforts to uphold journalistic excellence. “As we look ahead, I remain confident in our ability to continue to set the bar for journalistic excellence. I am so proud of all that you do,” he concluded.

What’s Changing for Good Morning America?

One of the most notable changes involves a shift in how Good Morning America and GMA3 are produced. Previously, the two programs operated as separate entities, each with its own production unit. However, under the new structure, they are expected to be merged into a single production team.

The decision to consolidate is part of ABC’s broader strategy to improve ratings, particularly as GMA has recently fallen behind NBC’s Today show. The network is focused on revamping its approach to morning programming in an effort to regain its competitive edge.

While the specifics of the merger have not yet been detailed, the restructuring is expected to create a more efficient production model while still maintaining the core appeal of both GMA and GMA3.

Layoffs and Staff Departures

As ABC implements these changes, employees across various departments have begun packing up their desks, signaling an imminent wave of layoffs. Reports indicate that the restructuring extends beyond GMA, with other ABC News programs also being affected.

Among the divisions undergoing changes is World News Tonight, where staffers are expected to face similar job cuts. The late-night news program Nightline is also set to merge with the investigative series 20/20, potentially altering both shows’ formats and staffing.

Additionally, the data-driven news site FiveThirtyEight—which gained prominence for its election predictions—is reportedly facing complete closure. According to reports, all 15 employees at the site are set to be laid off.

Blame Game Among GMA3 Staffers

As the restructuring unfolds, some GMA3 employees have reportedly expressed frustration, placing blame on former anchors Amy Robach and TJ Holmes for the current situation. The duo was previously embroiled in a highly publicized scandal after their off-screen relationship was exposed, leading to their eventual departure from ABC.

Some insiders believe that the controversy surrounding Robach and Holmes tainted GMA3’s reputation and contributed to the program’s decline. Now, with the show being restructured, tensions among staff are running high as employees grapple with the uncertainty surrounding their roles.

Michael Strahan’s Future at ABC

Amid the shakeups, speculation has swirled around the future of Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan. The former NFL star has recently been absent from the show for extended periods, leading to rumors that he might be stepping away.

While Strahan remains a key figure at ABC, his role on GMA has been in question as he juggles multiple commitments, including his work on Fox NFL Sunday. With ABC News making sweeping changes to its morning programming, it remains unclear how his position will be affected in the long term.

Looking Ahead

The restructuring at ABC News signals a major transition for the network as it aims to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving media landscape. While Good Morning America will continue to be a staple of morning television, the changes to its production structure and overall format could significantly reshape the show’s future.

For now, staff members are adjusting to the uncertain landscape as ABC moves forward with its efforts to modernize and consolidate its news programming. The impact of these decisions will become clearer in the coming months as the new format takes effect and ratings reflect the success—or challenges—of the network’s strategic overhaul.
