The Oscar-winning actor recalled the moment he met the late Luke Perry on the set of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,
describing it as a memorable and deeply humbling experience. DiCaprio’s comments were made during the release of I Am Luke Perry,
a new documentary celebrating the life and legacy of the beloved actor who tragically passed away in 2019.
Perry, who was widely adored for his role as Dylan McKay on the iconic ’90s series Beverly Hills,
90210, appeared in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as Wayne Maunder, a real-life actor.
DiCaprio, who portrayed Rick Dalton, a fading TV Western star in the film, shared that meeting Perry on set was an unforgettable experience. Despite being a Hollywood veteran, DiCaprio admitted to feeling starstruck in Perry’s presence, reflecting on how much Perry meant to him growing up.
“I remember being in my teens, and he was the manifestation of the new James Dean on television,” DiCaprio shared in the documentary. “Everyone was crazy about him, and I felt this overwhelming feeling of being starstruck when I met him on set.”
DiCaprio explained how his admiration for Perry only deepened once they began talking. “I was immediately struck by his kindness,” he said, adding that despite having worked in the entertainment industry for most of his life, it was rare to meet someone with such a warm and genuine nature.
