Jeopardy! champ Matt Amodio discloses the reason for his recent success: “I suffer from AOS syndrome!”

The upcoming return of Jeopardy! Masters in 2025 is already generating excitement,

and for good reason—two of the show’s most dominant contestants are stepping into their roles as the game’s so-called villains.

James Holzhauer has long embraced his persona as Jeopardy!’s resident bad guy, known for his aggressive gameplay and bold wagers.

Now, he’s got some competition.

Matt Amodio, another of the show’s biggest winners, has earned his spot in the upcoming Masters tournament

after an impressive victory in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament (JIT).

And from the way he’s approaching this new challenge, it’s clear he’s determined to become an even more formidable opponent.

Matt Amodio’s JIT Victory Solidifies His Status

In the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament, Amodio delivered a commanding performance, securing his spot in Jeopardy! Masters by defeating Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer in back-to-back wins. His ability to dominate his competition so thoroughly is part of what’s shaping his reputation as a potential game show villain—one who is not just skilled but seemingly unstoppable.

Speaking about his victory and future in Jeopardy!, Amodio admitted that his thirst for knowledge remains as strong as ever. Despite having a full-time job, he makes it a priority to keep learning, explaining:

“With a full-time job, it does have to take a bit of a back-burner, but it will never be further back from that, because it’s just fun. I am obsessed with learning and knowledge, so it’s just a pleasure to have extra reason to do this.”

For his fellow competitors, the idea that someone as accomplished as Amodio is still actively pushing himself to improve should be a daunting prospect. He doesn’t need to continue refining his trivia skills—but he does so because he enjoys it.

Preparing for an Intense Rematch

As Amodio prepares to return for Jeopardy! Masters, he’ll be facing off against some of the best players in recent history, including last year’s top three—Victoria Groce, James Holzhauer, and Yogesh Raut—as well as Tournament of Champions winner Neilesh Vinjamuri and an additional competitor yet to be announced.

Rather than relying on past success, Amodio is taking his preparation seriously, acknowledging that the stakes are even higher at this level of competition.

“I think I’m mostly doing the same things as always, but with the caveat that now I know I’m in tournament life for the rest of my Jeopardy! life. I know I can raise the obscurity level on the trivia one level higher, because when I come on this stage, things that may have seemed too obscure for the regular Jeopardy! or in Masters or in JIT, that’s bottom-row material, so I keep the eye out for a tougher level.”

This mindset makes it clear that Amodio isn’t just aiming to compete—he’s striving to master even the most challenging aspects of the game. He’s aware that in Jeopardy! Masters, the difficulty level is significantly higher, and he’s adjusting accordingly.

Amodio’s Place in Jeopardy! History

Matt Amodio’s Jeopardy! legacy is already cemented as one of the greatest contestants the show has ever seen. He currently ranks fourth in total earnings, with over $1.8 million won across his various appearances. He also holds the third-longest winning streak in the show’s history, with 38 consecutive victories—behind only Ken Jennings (74) and Amy Schneider (40).

Despite his already impressive track record, Amodio isn’t slowing down. He’s returning to Jeopardy! Masters not just to continue competing, but to prove he can stand toe-to-toe with other elite players like Holzhauer and Groce.

A Rivalry Worth Watching

One of the most intriguing aspects of the upcoming tournament is the brewing rivalry between Matt Amodio and James Holzhauer. Holzhauer has long played up his role as Jeopardy!’s ultimate villain, using his high-stakes strategy and confident demeanor to dominate the competition. But with Amodio stepping into the spotlight with a similarly intimidating presence, the tournament is set to be a battle of two powerhouses.

While both contestants have completely different playstyles—Holzhauer being an aggressive high-roller and Amodio favoring a more calculated and methodical approach—each of them brings a unique energy to the game that makes them a must-watch duo.

As Jeopardy! Masters 2025 approaches, fans can expect an intense showdown filled with bold wagers, brilliant gameplay, and plenty of competitive banter. Whether Amodio fully embraces the villain persona or simply lets his dominance speak for itself, one thing is certain—he’s coming prepared, and his competitors should be worried.
