MSNBC shocks fans by ending Joy Reid’s program! What could be the contentious cause for this move?

The cancellation of Joy Ann Reid’s primetime MSNBC show, The ReidOut, has sparked significant debate.

While some have pointed to race as a factor behind her ouster, a deeper, more pressing issue seems to be the ideological content of her reporting—specifically,

her unapologetic stance on Palestinian issues. This article argues that while Reid’s identity as a Black woman may have played a role in her departure,

the true reason for her firing lies in her willingness to challenge mainstream narratives, particularly in her coverage of Palestine.

The Racism Argument: Examining the Context

Many commentators have voiced concern that Reid’s cancellation is part of a broader pattern of MSNBC’s treatment of Black hosts.

Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow both highlighted the racial dynamics at play, with some pundits framing Reid’s departure as a racist purge within the network. Keith Olbermann’s comments painted the situation as “an MSNBC purge so brutally racist it makes you think it was done by Musk,” while Elie Mystal noted that Reid cultivated new Black voices on her show, which may have added to her challenges.

However, this focus on race misses a critical point—Reid’s ideology and her coverage of certain contentious issues, particularly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Reid was not the first Black host at MSNBC to have her show canceled. Melissa Harris-Perry, Tiffany Cross, and others—also prominent Black voices—faced similar fates. In these cases, their departures were not just about race but about editorial choices and their willingness to tackle topics that challenged dominant political and media narratives.

Ratings and Race: The Real Story

Some have speculated that Reid’s show was canceled due to declining ratings. It is true that MSNBC, like many other networks, faced a ratings crisis in 2022, particularly after President Biden’s election. Reid’s ratings dropped by 47% after the 2022 midterms, but they remained competitive when compared to other MSNBC shows. In fact, Nielsen ratings from February 2024 showed that Reid outperformed several of her peers. If ratings were truly the deciding factor, Reid’s show would not have been an easy target, especially given that her numbers were on par with other primetime anchors.

Thus, the decline in ratings cannot explain her cancellation. The more likely explanation lies in the controversial content that Reid was willing to tackle, particularly her coverage of Palestine. Amid bipartisan censorship surrounding Israel’s actions in Gaza, Reid stood out for her unapologetic stance on Palestinian rights and her criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Her willingness to use terms like “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” when describing Israeli actions made her a target in a media environment that often limits such discussions.

The Pro-Palestine Stance

Reid’s coverage of Palestine was one of the few bold stances in mainstream American media, where criticism of Israel is often met with swift backlash. Her show regularly featured Palestinian voices and advocates for Palestinian rights. Last year, she hosted author Ta-Nehisi Coates to discuss the lack of Palestinian representation in Gaza coverage, and she has been outspoken in affirming the right of Americans to object to U.S. support for Israeli military actions.

This willingness to challenge the political establishment, including her own Democratic Party, became a significant point of contention. Reid’s coverage of Gaza was particularly relevant after the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict. Her stance on Palestinian issues was echoed by other MSNBC hosts who were similarly suspended or let go, including Ayman Mohyeldin, Mehdi Hasan, and Ali Velshi, all of whom were outspoken in their criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza. Reid’s departure from the network appears to reflect an uncomfortable truth: MSNBC, like many corporate media outlets, does not tolerate pro-Palestinian voices in its primetime slots.

Replacements and Corporate Media Dynamics

After Reid’s cancellation, her show was replaced by a three-person panel that includes Symone Sanders, a former Democratic strategist, and Michael Steele, a former Republican National Committee chairman. This shift highlights the network’s preference for voices that are ideologically aligned with the establishment, even when those voices are Black.

Symone Sanders’ move to MSNBC as a replacement for Reid represents a broader trend within corporate media, where narratives that align with the political establishment are prioritized. Sanders, like other hosts who transition from political communication to mainstream media, reflects the network’s comfort with figures who uphold the status quo. This is in stark contrast to Reid’s willingness to challenge both the Democratic Party and American foreign policy, especially regarding Israel and Palestine.

The Real Reason for Reid’s Ouster

While the issue of race cannot be ignored in discussions about Joy Reid’s firing, it is clear that the deeper, ideological reason for her departure is her refusal to toe the line on certain issues. Her fearless stance on Palestine, and her willingness to challenge both political parties, made her a target in a media environment where such positions are seen as problematic. In the end, Reid’s cancellation speaks to the broader issue of ideological censorship in mainstream media—where dissenting voices, particularly those critical of U.S. foreign policy, are silenced.

Joy Reid was not let go because she is Black. She was let go because she dared to ask tough questions and offer a perspective that ran counter to the dominant narratives on foreign policy, race, and the American political system. That is the real reason why she is no longer hosting The ReidOut—and why MSNBC’s primetime lineup looks more homogenous than ever before.
