Following heart surgery, television host Emma Willis discusses her frightening anxiety and the challenging path to discover inner tranquility.

Emma Willis Reveals She’s “Terrified” as She Opens Up About “Emotional Recovery” After Heart Surgery

Television presenter Emma Willis, 49, has courageously opened up about her journey following keyhole heart surgery, which she underwent in May to treat an undiagnosed heart condition. In a candid discussion, she shared that the healing process was not only a physical challenge but also a significant mental hurdle, leaving her feeling anxious and nervous leading up to her surgery.

Discovering the Heart Condition

Willis expressed her shock upon learning that she had a “hole in her heart,” something she had been completely unaware of until just recently. The discovery of this condition, coupled with the impending surgery, triggered a wave of anxiety in her. Emma shared that being an “overthinker” has made it difficult for her to navigate her thoughts, often spiraling into worrying about various worst-case scenarios.

Physical Versus Psychological Recovery

Although the surgery was less invasive compared to traditional open-heart operations and she has experienced a smooth physical recovery, Emma emphasized that the greatest challenge she faces is psychological. As she adjusts to her body’s new way of functioning, she grapples with the emotional ramifications of her surgery. Understanding that her heart needs to heal and learn to operate differently going forward has brought on its own unique set of challenges.

Support from Loved Ones and Future Endeavors

Throughout this recovery process, the support from her husband, Matt Willis of the band Busted, has been vital. Matt has been instrumental in helping her through this journey, utilizing techniques related to breathwork and wellness to aid Emma’s emotional stability. In addition to her personal recovery, Emma is set to return to television with a new BBC One series titled *Change Your Mind, Change Your Life*. This series will focus on mental health, and the couple hopes to draw from their personal experiences with therapy to help others navigate the mental health challenges of modern life.

Emma took to social media to express her gratitude for the advancements in modern medicine and to acknowledge the healthcare professionals who played a crucial role in her surgery. With Matt by her side and her new television project on the horizon, she feels a renewed sense of hope and optimism about what lies ahead.

Emma’s condition, known as an atrial septal defect (ASD), is a congenital heart defect where a hole exists between the heart’s chambers. While some small defects may resolve on their own, larger ones typically necessitate surgical intervention. Post-surgery, most individuals are able to return to leading normal, fulfilling lives. Emma’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of health awareness and the critical role that the love and support of family and friends play during recovery.
