The tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have left those closest to them in mourning. 

Among their longtime friends, Daniel and Barbara Lenihan, along with their children, have shared details of their last conversation with the couple before their unexpected passing.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 64, were discovered deceased in their Santa Fe Summit home on February 26. 

While the exact cause of death remains under investigation, authorities have noted 

that certain circumstances surrounding the scene require further examination.

A Decades-Long Friendship

The Lenihans lived just ten minutes away from Hackman and Arakawa and had been close friends with them for decades. Daniel, 79, first met the Academy Award-winning actor in 1992, and their friendship quickly grew. Over the years, the two families formed a strong bond, describing Hackman and Arakawa as incredibly kind and generous individuals.

“They were just very kind people,” Barbara, 75, reflected. “Always warm and thoughtful.”

Their Last Conversation

The final communication between the Lenihan family and Hackman and Arakawa occurred two to three weeks before the couple was found. Brendan Lenihan, 41, spoke with Arakawa about the upcoming birth of his second child.

“[Brendan] was telling Betsy it was a boy, and she was very excited,” Barbara shared. “It wasn’t a real long message, but then Brendan was hoping to hear back again soon.”

Remembering Gene Hackman

Barbara described Hackman as a true “Renaissance man,” praising his intelligence and artistic nature. Arakawa, a talented pianist, was also remembered for her sharp wit and humor.

For Daniel, the defining trait of Hackman’s personality was his intensity. “Gene was someone who, when he had an idea about something—whether it was a project we were working on or just something he wanted to do—you could hear the passion in his voice,” he recalled. “He would lay it out like it was something that absolutely needed to be done.”

Brendan’s younger brother, Aaron, 38, also admired Hackman, noting his kindness and integrity. “He was always extremely kind to us,” Aaron said. “But everyone else I ever saw him interact with, I think he was very honest, had a lot of integrity. He was an incredible artist. He even taught my brother and me how to paint.”

The Mystery Surrounding Their Deaths

While initial reports indicated no foul play was suspected in the couple’s deaths, authorities have since revealed that certain elements at the scene warrant further investigation. A search warrant affidavit mentioned a knocked-over heater, an open pill bottle, and their dogs roaming freely in the house.

Adding to the mystery, Hackman’s pacemaker was last detected as operational on February 17, meaning the couple may have been deceased for nine days before being found.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding their passing.

A Private Life Away from Hollywood

For years, Hackman and Arakawa led a private life away from the spotlight. The two-time Oscar-winning actor, known for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, retired from Hollywood nearly two decades ago. His last known public appearance with Arakawa was in March 2024, when they were spotted having lunch together at a restaurant in Santa Fe.

Hackman and Arakawa married in 1991, and their love endured for more than three decades. Their passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew them, but their legacy of kindness, talent, and generosity will continue to be remembered.
