Gayle King, known for her sharp interviewing skills, took an unexpected turn during a CBS Mornings segment on Tuesday 

when she playfully flipped the script on podcast host Alex Cooper. 

The 70-year-old veteran journalist caught Cooper off guard by asking her a rather personal question—her favorite sex position with her husband, Matt Kaplan. 

The couple tied the knot in a stunning ceremony in Riviera Maya, Mexico, in 2024.

The exchange unfolded as King praised Cooper’s ability to get celebrities to open up on her popular podcast, Call Her Daddy. 

King noted how Cooper has engaged stars like Katy Perry, Hailey Bieber, and Simone Biles in candid discussions about love, relationships, and personal struggles. 

“I’m amazed by how you do it,” King said. “We’re sitting there in those hooded sweatshirts, which makes everyone comfortable, and then you ask these raunchy questions—sprinkled in with a lot of smart, too.”

Cooper, visibly taken aback by King’s unexpected question, laughed and exclaimed, “Oh my God, Gayle, are we allowed to talk about that?” Meanwhile, King’s CBS Mornings co-hosts, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil, joined in on the laughter. They jokingly interjected that their producers had already ruled out answering that particular question.

King was quick to clarify her intent, explaining that her bold inquiry was not meant to be taken seriously. “I’m making a point [that this] is what Alex does on her show [with her guests],” King said, emphasizing how Cooper’s signature interviewing style involves blending lighthearted, daring questions with deeper, meaningful conversations. The moment left Cooper wiping away tears of laughter as she acknowledged King’s clever reversal.

Cooper, who launched the Unwell Network in August 2023, has made a name for herself with her unique approach to celebrity interviews. She later reflected on how she navigates sensitive topics on Call Her Daddy, explaining that while she does ask bold questions, they are carefully timed and presented in a way that ensures her guests feel comfortable.

“There’s a lot that goes into it prior to [the interview],” Cooper explained. “I’m not asking [something like their favorite sex position] as the first question in the interview. I think there’s a rapport that I build with these people, and yes, when I’m asking [celebrities], it is a question we want to know, but it’s asked in the appropriate way at the right time.”

Cooper emphasized the importance of reading the room and being aware of her guests’ comfort levels. “I’ve also been interviewed a lot of times, and I can recognize when someone is not reading the room,” she said. “You’re like, ‘That was not an appropriate question to ask.’ I think that’s what I take pride in—making my audience feel comfortable and my guests feel comfortable too.”
