Amy Schumer recently weighed in on the growing rumors surrounding the potential romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short. 

The 43-year-old comedian and actress shared her thoughts on the speculation, 

offering a playful hint about the relationship during an interview with People on Sunday, February 16.

Schumer had just attended the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert a couple of days earlier, where she had the chance to sit next to both Short, 74, and Streep, 75. 

Reflecting on the experience, Schumer expressed how enjoyable it was to be in such great company. 

“There’s really no one funnier to sit next to than Marty Short, who I got to sit next to at the homecoming concert the other night,” Schumer said. 

She went on to tease the possibility of a romance between the two actors, noting, “I think that the tea is, I think Marty might be off the market. That’s what I’m seeing. I don’t know.”

While Schumer didn’t directly name Streep as the person who could have captured Short’s heart, she dropped another clue, saying, “Maybe by just like the greatest actor of our time, I don’t know.” The remark only fueled the rumors further, and Schumer continued by gushing about how enjoyable it was to be seated next to both stars during the concert, calling it “a very fun seat to be seated in.”

The speculation surrounding a potential relationship between Streep and Short has been brewing for months. It all began in December 2023 when Time Out New York theater critic Adam Feldman hinted at two surprising celebrity couples who were keeping their romances under wraps. Fans quickly jumped to the conclusion that Streep and Short might be one of these mysterious pairs.

Short, who stars as Oliver Putnam, shared his excitement and nervousness about working alongside the legendary actress, who plays his character’s love interest, Loretta Durkin. “It was one of the great thrills of my life,” Short confessed. “In fact, the first day of shooting — which was rare because I’m not brand new — I was driving to work and I thought, ‘I’m nervous today. I’m working with Meryl Streep.’”

Then, in August 2024, another moment between Short and Streep sparked even more intrigue. At a season 4 premiere party for Only Murders in the Building, the two were photographed holding hands, causing a flurry of excitement among fans. Shortly after, Short was asked about his relationship with Streep, and he shared that he had “love” for her. “I think it’s been a friendship that always grows if you work with someone and love that person,” he explained to Extra.

The rumors took yet another turn in October 2024 when their Only Murders in the Building co-star, Steve Martin, shared an image of the trio on social media, but playfully crossed out his own face with an emoji. Fans were quick to react, asking if the post was confirming the romantic relationship between Streep and Short. One user commented, “Are u confirming this relationship?!” while another expressed their joy at the idea of the two stars together, saying, “I don’t know why the thought of Meryl and Martin makes me so happy but it honestly fills my heart with joy.”

While neither Streep nor Short have publicly confirmed a romantic relationship, their close bond and the numerous public moments they’ve shared have left fans speculating.
