During his conversation with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Rick Pitino playfully interrupted when Jimmy jokingly stated that he was “101 years old.”

Rick Pitino is no stranger to the spotlight, but his latest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon proved that his talents extend beyond the basketball court.

The legendary coach, currently leading the St. John’s Red Storm, took a break from the sidelines to showcase his comedic side during an entertaining interview on Thursday night.

A Historic Season for St. John’s

Pitino’s visit to The Tonight Show came at a time of great success for St. John’s.

In his second season with the team, he has led the Red Storm to a remarkable milestone—securing their first outright Big East regular-season title in 40 years.

His achievements have generated excitement among fans and heightened expectations as the team prepares for the upcoming Big East Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

While Pitino’s players did not join him on stage, they were featured in a pre-recorded sketch aired at the beginning of the show. In the segment, the team performed a sea shanty with Pitino donning his signature white suit, a lighthearted moment that delighted viewers.

Pitino’s Self-Deprecating Humor Wins Over the Audience

During his interview with Fallon, Pitino kept the conversation lively with his sharp wit. Reflecting on his long career, the coach jokingly told the audience, “I just turned 101,” which was met with laughter from the crowd.

Pitino has been coaching for five decades, and his resume includes stints at powerhouse programs such as Kentucky and Louisville. His ability to connect with players and inspire teams has made him one of college basketball’s most respected figures.

The Wedding Night Job Interview Story

One of the standout moments of the night was when Pitino shared a hilarious and shocking story about how he spent his wedding night—not celebrating with his new bride, but sneaking away for a job interview.

As he recounted to Fallon, Pitino had arranged to meet with legendary Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim on the night of his wedding. “I told my wife, ‘I’m gonna leave you just for an hour. We’re going to Hawaii tomorrow for our honeymoon, and I just have to meet this gentleman really quickly,’” he recalled.

What was supposed to be a brief meeting stretched into a much longer conversation. Hours later, Pitino finally called his wife and told her, “Honey, just open the [wedding] envelopes, I’ll be right up.”

By the time he returned to his wife, he had secured the job at Syracuse, but there were two major catches. First, they would be moving to Syracuse, a place known for its heavy snowfall. “That’s the same place that gets 122 inches of snow, right?” his wife asked, unimpressed.

The second issue? Their honeymoon plans were immediately canceled. Pitino had to start his new job the next day, heading straight to Cincinnati to recruit a player. “We never had a honeymoon to Hawaii,” he admitted, “but we’ve had quite a few trips after that.” Now, 48 years later, Pitino and his wife have built a strong marriage despite the unconventional start.

A Warm Reception from the Audience

Pitino was met with applause when he walked onto Fallon’s set, and the energy in the room remained high throughout his interview. His charisma, combined with his legendary coaching career, made for an engaging and entertaining appearance.

As St. John’s prepares for the next stage of their historic season, Pitino remains focused on the challenges ahead. The Red Storm have recorded a program-best 17 Big East wins, putting them in a strong position heading into the postseason. Fans are hopeful that Pitino’s leadership will guide the team to a deep tournament run.

An Invitation to Return

Fallon, clearly impressed by Pitino’s storytelling and success, extended an invitation for him to return to The Tonight Show—under one condition. “Come back when you win March Madness,” Fallon told him, a statement filled with optimism.

Pitino accepted the offer but was quick to temper expectations, noting that injuries had left some key players sidelined. However, with his extensive experience and ability to motivate his team, there is no doubt that St. John’s will be a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament.

Pitino’s appearance on The Tonight Show was a reminder of his charisma, dedication, and sense of humor. Whether on the court or in front of a late-night audience, he knows how to put on a show. Now, all eyes turn to March, where St. John’s will look to add another historic achievement to their already memorable season.
