Hoda Kotb “wipes away tears” as she confesses she REGRETS leaving TODAY for her kids: “I didn’t expect it to be this hard…”

After 17 years as a beloved anchor on NBC’s Today, Hoda Kotb is stepping away from her morning show duties.

The journalist announced her decision in an emotional letter to staff, shared on Thursday,

September 26, in which she expressed both excitement and sadness over this major life change.

“As I write this, my heart is all over the map,” Kotb admitted in her farewell note. “I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s a painful one.

And you all are the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I’m feeling that so deeply right now. I love you and it’s time for me to leave the show.”

While she prepares to exit her role as co-anchor, Kotb reassured fans that this isn’t a complete goodbye.

She will remain with NBC in some capacity beyond early 2025, marking the next chapter in her long-standing relationship with the network.

Prioritizing Family and Embracing Change

Kotb’s decision to leave Today is rooted in her desire to spend more time with her family. “My broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie,” she wrote.

Though stepping away from her daily television role will be an adjustment, Kotb is looking forward to what’s ahead. “I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited,” she added.

She made it clear that her connection to NBC remains strong, stating, “Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest work relationship I’ve been lucky enough to hold close to my heart. I’ll be around. How could I not? Family is family, and you all will always be a part of mine.”

A Trailblazing Career at Today

Kotb’s tenure on Today has been nothing short of historic. She joined the network in 2007, originally as the first-ever host of Today’s fourth-hour broadcast. When Kathie Lee Gifford joined her in 2008, the duo became one of the most beloved pairings in morning television. After Gifford’s departure in 2019, Jenna Bush Hager took over as Kotb’s co-host, continuing the legacy of the 10 a.m. hour.

In 2018, Kotb made history once again when she was named co-anchor of Today alongside Savannah Guthrie, following Matt Lauer’s departure. Their partnership marked a groundbreaking moment as the first time two women co-anchored the morning show.

Throughout her time on Today, Kotb has been known for her warmth, authenticity, and ability to connect with viewers. From covering major news stories to sharing personal milestones, she has been a comforting and familiar presence in the homes of millions.

Motherhood and a Fresh Start

Kotb has always been open about her journey to motherhood, which has been an essential part of her life while at Today. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, she was left unable to conceive. However, she later adopted her first daughter, Haley Joy, in 2017, and her second daughter, Hope Catherine, in 2019. She shares both girls with her former fiancé, Joel Schiffman.

Recently, Kotb and her daughters embarked on another exciting chapter—moving to a new home in the suburbs. The transition was significant, but she is thrilled to give her children a more traditional childhood experience.

“They’re so excited to have their own space,” she shared with Today. “They’re excited about a reading chair, they’re excited about having a beanbag chair, and their bed — that kind of stuff.”

Adjusting to a new community hasn’t been without its challenges. “It’s all new—new kids, new school, new things, new everything,” she admitted. “But all I could think of was that I want my house to feel warm and cozy—a place where they want to hang out.”

In an interview with PEOPLE, Kotb reflected on the decision to move. “I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, play in the yard, ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs,” she said. “I just see that life for them in this perfect house in this beautiful little town where I know they’ll be able to blossom into beautiful, independent, strong women.”

What’s Next for Hoda Kotb?

Though Kotb is stepping away from her daily anchoring duties, her presence in media isn’t going away completely. She has made it clear that she will still be involved with NBC in some way, though details about her future role have yet to be announced.

Given her passion for storytelling and personal growth, it’s possible she will continue exploring projects that align with her interests, such as her Making Space podcast, which focuses on self-discovery and wellness.

Fans recently saw Kotb covering the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, though her daughters remained home. Even while balancing work and motherhood, she continues to embrace every opportunity that comes her way.

As she prepares for this transition, one thing is certain: Hoda Kotb’s impact on Today and its viewers will not be forgotten. From her groundbreaking achievements to her heartwarming connection with audiences, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and inspiration.
