Jenna Bush Hager recently shared a humorous yet revealing anecdote about her father, former President George W. Bush, and his playful jabs regarding her past.

of three recounted a moment when her father publicly brought up her past arrest for underage drinking, turning it into what she described as a “roast.”
A Public “Roast” by George W. Bush
While discussing her weekend with co-host Hoda Kotb, Jenna revealed that she had spent time with her parents, George W. and Laura Bush.
As she was explaining the family dynamic, Hoda inquired about who moderated the discussion, prompting Jenna to humorously declare, “Me!”
She then shared how her father took the opportunity to playfully embarrass her. “I would give some insight here or there when I felt like I could, but other than that, he would be like, ‘Yeah, Jen, okay, why don’t you tell everybody about the time you were arrested?’” Jenna said, laughing. The lighthearted exchange was filled with playful ribbing from her father, turning what was meant to be a structured discussion into a comedic event. “It was just a one-hour roast,” Jenna joked. “I would ask questions, he would roast me a little, I would ask a question, a slight roast, and that’s what happened—but it was fun and funny.”

Jenna also shared that former President Barack Obama was in attendance at the event and witnessed her father’s relentless teasing. According to Jenna, President Obama even asked her how she managed to handle it. “He must have seen some of the roasting and he said, ‘This must be hard for you,’ and I said, ‘Yes, it is,’” she recalled.

Jenna’s past legal trouble has been a topic of conversation before. The incident in question occurred in 2001 when she was a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. At just 19 years old, she was arrested for underage drinking after being caught with a beer at a club. She pleaded no contest and was required to complete eight hours of community service, attend an alcohol awareness class, and pay a $51.25 fine in court costs.
Only a month later, her twin sister, Barbara Bush, who was a student at Yale at the time, visited her in Austin, and both were caught attempting to purchase alcohol at a local restaurant using fake identification. A manager at the establishment alerted authorities, leading to their arrests. The incident garnered widespread media attention as it occurred just months after their father took office as the President of the United States.

The question immediately made Jenna suspicious, leading her to joke, “I think they’re trying to shame us with our underage drinking, minor possession of alcohol.” Barbara agreed, laughing, “Yeah, that was rude.”

Jenna humbly responded that her speeches are often filled with emotion. “You know, I usually just get up there and kind of cry. [It’s] just like all sorts of emotions, but it was a lot of fun, and I’m happy to be home.”
