Jennifer Garner recently shared heartbreaking photos on Instagram, capturing the aftermath of the devastating fires 

that ravaged parts of Los Angeles, including the destruction of her family’s church. 

The actress, 52, took to her platform to reflect on the loss of the United Methodist Community Church, a place that held deep personal significance for her and her family. 

The church, which was once a central gathering spot for the Pacific Palisades community, was destroyed in the fires 

that began on January 7, leaving behind only the charred remnants of the building and surrounding area.

In a poignant post, Garner included a photo of a mug with a Christmas tree design found amidst the rubble of the church. 

This seemingly small, sentimental item was a symbol of hope for the actress. She shared in the caption, “A little moment of light and hope to end the week,” explaining that she had sent mugs to the pastor and music director of the church during the holidays. “A couple of weeks later, our church, along with the beautiful town surrounding it, was gone,” she added. The church, which had been a place of worship and community for many, was now a pile of debris, with only a few remnants left behind.

Garner further described how Ross and Zach, individuals from the church, had sifted through the ashes, searching for anything they could find to preserve the memories of the space. The discovery of the mug was a small but meaningful reminder of the love and connection the church fostered among its members. “Imagine my surprise when I opened this photo—’We found one thing,’” Garner wrote, reflecting on the emotional experience. 

The church’s destruction was particularly difficult for Garner, who had grown up in the Pacific Palisades area and had sent her children to Sunday school there. She had shared fond memories of the church in previous interviews, describing it as a “gathering point for the entire community” and a place where families of all backgrounds came together. “It’s full of quirky, cool, mostly blue-collar people,” she said. “I loved belonging there because wherever I went, I would run into somebody from our community.” The church had been a central part of her family’s life, with Garner recalling the times she and her children lit the Advent candle and watched performances by the Sunday school children.

In addition to her emotional post about the church, Garner shared a before-and-after photo of the building, which showed the sign in front of the church still intact before the flames consumed it. The sign, which once read, “Join us for a joyful Christmas season. Pastor John Shaver,” now serves as a haunting reminder of the church’s former life. 

The fires, which began on January 7 amid the powerful Santa Ana winds, ravaged large areas, including the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, with the Eaton Fire causing significant damage. In the days that followed, Garner took time to volunteer in the affected communities, providing meals to victims through World Central Kitchen. During an emotional interview with MSNBC, she revealed the depth of her personal connection to the devastation, saying, “It’s my family’s church.” She described how the loss of the church, along with thousands of homes in the community, left her feeling heartbroken for her friends and neighbors.

Garner also candidly spoke about the loss of a friend in the fires, a tragedy that weighed heavily on her. “I did lose a friend who did not get out on time,” she said, her voice breaking. This loss, coupled with the destruction of the church, left Garner with a sense of helplessness. “What can I do? How can I help?” she reflected, as she acknowledged the immense loss felt by the entire community.

The actress, known for her philanthropic work with organizations like Save The Children, also expressed her commitment to supporting those affected by the fires. She worked alongside World Central Kitchen’s José Andrés to help provide food and resources to those in need. “I was able to just say, ‘Can I be with you for the day? What can I do to help? Put me to work,’” Garner explained.
