Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are no strangers to sharing hilarious and relatable moments on Live with Kelly and Mark, 

but this week, they took it a step further by recalling a particularly frightening flight that still gives them both a laugh. 

The couple shared their hair-raising experience aboard a propeller plane, highlighting the moments 

that made them question the pilot’s qualifications—and their own safety.

The conversation began when Consuelos congratulated NBA star LeBron James for reaching 50,000 career points, prompting a discussion on aging. 

Consuelos quipped that he first started feeling “old” when he saw Derek Jeter retire, noting that watching someone’s career progress from the start to the end is a clear sign of time passing. 

Ripa, ever the insightful co-host, chimed in with her own sign of aging: when she gets on an airplane and notices that the pilots look incredibly young.

“I always think now, speaking of old… but when I get on an airplane, and the pilots are newborn babies,” Ripa joked. “And you think surely, you don’t even have a driver’s license.”

While Ripa spoke in general terms, Consuelos reminded her of a specific flight they had taken in the past, which left a lasting impression on them both. The couple had boarded a prop plane for their trip, and what followed would make any passenger a little uneasy.

“Very, very, very young pilot,” Consuelos recalled. “He was a child.”

Ripa, who had not forgotten the experience, quickly added, “Well, that was a child.” The memory still clearly made an impact on the couple, who were already feeling anxious before realizing just how inexperienced the pilot seemed.

But things took an even more bizarre turn when the young pilot did something that left Ripa and Consuelos stunned: he pulled out his phone and set it on the dashboard, using it as the plane’s navigation tool.

“He gets his phone and he puts it on the dash and hits the navigation,” Consuelos explained, while Ripa quickly added, “Dashboard. Of the plane. And hits, like, Maps.”

The couple’s reaction was a mixture of disbelief and concern. Consuelos joked about the situation, saying, “And I was like, ‘You didn’t bring your guitar, did you? Please tell me you didn’t bring your guitar.’” His reference to La Bamba was a lighthearted attempt to ease the tension, but Ripa was clearly on edge.

“I’m holding hands with Mark,” she recalled, “and staring at the child with his phone, which looked like a video game.” Ripa further noted that the scene felt surreal, likening the phone’s display to the popular game Minecraft, which added to the already uncomfortable atmosphere.

The flight continued, and as the couple braced for takeoff, they found themselves texting their children to say their goodbyes, just in case things went wrong. “I’m going to text the kids and let them know that we love them,” Ripa said. “Just because nothing good can happen right now.”

But the chaos didn’t end there. As if the situation weren’t unsettling enough, Ripa revealed that the flight crew asked her for her weight—an odd request that made her even more suspicious about the flight’s safety protocols. In a humorous twist, she decided to give them an exaggerated answer, saying, “250 pounds.”

“When I said that, they stared at me,” Ripa recalled. “I said, ‘I am recovering from the lie that you were just told.’”

Consuelos, quick to add his own humor, responded, “It’s not your goal weight, Albert. Not the goal weight. These are actual physics.”

The couple’s playful banter continued as they joked about the process of balancing the weight on the aircraft. “They move you around on the aircraft to balance it,” Consuelos added. “We’re just making sure we’re good.”

Despite the stressful circumstances, Ripa and Consuelos were quick to acknowledge that they made it through the flight safely, a fact that brought them some comfort—and plenty of laughs in hindsight. “Yeah, it was—well, we’re here!” Ripa concluded. “We’re all here. Everybody made it.”
