Megan Thee Stallion faces backlash for being described as “reckless to a fault” after she made a public statement about her intention to visit the man who “abused her”—specifically while he’s incarcerated.

Megan Thee Stallion’s legal team is making significant strides in their ongoing legal battle with rapper Tory Lanez, seeking to depose him behind bars.

The move comes over a year and a half after Lanez began serving a 10-year prison sentence following his conviction for shooting Megan in 2020.

On Monday, a federal judge approved Megan’s request to depose Lanez, also known as Daystar Peterson, under oath.

This request was part of a defamation and cyberstalking lawsuit Megan filed against YouTuber Milagro Gramz, whose real name is Milagro Cooper.

Gramz has been a vocal supporter of Lanez throughout his trial and subsequent conviction,

and Megan has accused her of being a “paid surrogate” spreading false and harmful rumors on his behalf, even from behind bars.

Megan’s legal team requested a remote deposition rather than an in-person interview with Lanez, who is currently incarcerated. Although the motion was not opposed, Lanez’s lawyer, Ceasar McDowell, the CEO of the nonprofit law firm Unite the People, which represents Lanez, expressed skepticism. McDowell stated that Lanez had no intention of participating in a deposition and noted that since Lanez is not a party in the lawsuit against Gramz, his legal team was under no obligation to have him testify. McDowell further suggested that Lanez is unlikely to testify voluntarily, pointing out that it’s not in his nature to cooperate in such matters.

Despite McDowell’s comments, the judge signed off on the deposition request, allowing Megan’s legal team to proceed with questioning Lanez remotely. If Megan wishes, she is also permitted to attend the deposition herself, as she is the plaintiff in the lawsuit. The deposition could shed light on the accusations that Lanez orchestrated a smear campaign through social media and other channels to harass and defame Megan following his conviction.

Megan’s defamation lawsuit revolves around claims that Gramz, who has repeatedly posted content supportive of Lanez, spread false narratives about Megan in an attempt to damage her reputation. One of the most egregious actions, according to Megan’s legal team, was Gramz sharing a deepfake pornographic video of Megan, a move that Megan’s attorney Alex Spiro argues violates a Florida statute prohibiting the creation and distribution of altered sexual depictions of real people.

Megan has been vocal about the emotional toll this prolonged harassment has taken on her. In a statement released earlier, she emphasized that the constant attacks on her character, fueled by false rumors spread by bloggers like Gramz, had caused significant distress. “I’ve endured countless attacks on my character based on false narratives from social media bloggers misrepresenting themselves as journalists,” Megan said. “It’s unacceptable behavior, and these individuals need to understand there will be repercussions for recklessly posting lies and defamatory falsehoods.”

This legal action comes just a month after Megan was granted a five-year restraining order against Lanez. In her court testimony, Megan had described Lanez’s behavior as a “campaign of harassment,” adding that she feared for her safety even while he was incarcerated. She expressed concerns that once he was released, he might retaliate against her, perhaps violently. Megan’s testimony was emotional as she recounted the trauma of being shot by Lanez and the ongoing anxiety she feels due to his alleged harassment.

Lanez’s legal troubles have not ended with his conviction. He is currently in the process of appealing his conviction, which included charges of first-degree assault with a firearm, gross negligence, and the possession of a concealed weapon. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has stated that Lanez will not be eligible for parole until at least May 2029.

Megan’s legal team hopes that by deposing Lanez, they will be able to further strengthen their case against Gramz and hold the blogger accountable for the harm caused by spreading false information. In addition to the defamation and cyberstalking claims, the lawsuit asserts that Gramz’s actions were intended to harass Megan and cause emotional distress.

While it remains to be seen whether Lanez will participate in the deposition or invoke his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, the legal proceedings continue to unfold. Megan’s efforts to seek justice for the harm she’s endured reflect her determination to hold individuals accountable for their actions, especially in the digital age where online harassment can have real-world consequences.
