Rachel Maddow from MSNBC criticizes the dismissal of Joy Reid, suggesting that the true motive behind it was to hide their own wrongdoing.

In a recent outburst on her show, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow expressed her strong disapproval of the network’s decision to part ways with Joy Reid,

calling it a “bad mistake” and “indefensible.”

The decision to cancel Reid’s show The ReidOut came amid a larger programming overhaul at MSNBC,

which also saw the removal of shows hosted by other prominent women of color, such as Alex Wagner and Katie Phang.

Maddow, a longtime colleague and friend of Reid, did not mince words during her segment.

“I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door,” Maddow stated on Monday night, acknowledging that while the decision wasn’t hers to make, it was one she deeply disagreed with.

She also made it clear how much she valued Reid, both professionally and personally. “There has been no colleague for whom I have had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid,” Maddow shared, highlighting the deep admiration she holds for Reid’s work and character.

The changes at MSNBC, which will take effect in April, are part of a broader strategy to reshape the network’s lineup. While Maddow will continue hosting her Monday-night show, several key shifts are underway. Most notably, Reid’s primetime slot at 7 p.m. ET will be replaced by a new panel program featuring Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez, all people of color. However, Maddow voiced concerns about the broader implications of these changes, particularly in terms of diversity representation at the network.

“I will tell you, it is also unnerving to see that on a network where we’ve got two – count them – two nonwhite hosts in primetime, both of our nonwhite hosts in primetime are losing their shows,” Maddow remarked, referring to Reid and Wagner, who will also be replaced by former White House press secretary Jen Psaki. “That feels worse than bad, no matter who replaces them. That feels indefensible. And I do not defend it.”

Maddow’s critique did not stop at the high-profile cancellations. She also raised concerns about the impact of the programming changes on the network’s production staff. Dozens of producers and staffers are facing layoffs or being asked to reapply for new positions as part of the overhaul. Maddow expressed sympathy for the staffers, many of whom are seasoned professionals. “They’re being invited to reapply for new jobs. That has never happened at this scale in this way before,” she explained. Maddow highlighted the inefficiency and unnecessary nature of these layoffs, stressing how it undermines morale within the company.

While Maddow was unequivocal in her criticism of MSNBC’s leadership, she did acknowledge the qualifications of those taking on new roles. Despite her concerns, she praised the network’s new on-air talent, stating, “Everybody who’s going to be in anchor chairs from here on out are great colleagues and great at what they do.” However, the changes felt troubling, especially when viewed through the lens of diversity and the disruption to the staff.

The decision to let Reid go, in particular, has generated significant backlash, with many viewers and media professionals echoing Maddow’s sentiments. Reid’s departure from the network marks the end of a long tenure, during which she became a well-known figure on MSNBC for her bold commentary and insightful coverage of political issues. Her sudden departure and the cancellation of her show left many viewers wondering about the network’s commitment to diverse voices, especially in primetime.

Maddow’s criticism of her employer is not a new development. Over the years, she has not hesitated to voice her displeasure when she disagrees with NBC and MSNBC’s decisions. In the past, Maddow called out NBC News for hiring Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chairwoman, as a political analyst, labeling it “inexplicable.” She also publicly criticized the network for airing Donald Trump’s victory speech in 2016, calling it “irresponsible.”

While some may view Maddow’s candor as controversial, it reflects her deep commitment to both her colleagues and her audience. Her willingness to challenge her network’s decisions speaks to her dedication to transparency and her belief in standing up for what she believes is right. Whether or not the network will reconsider its programming changes remains to be seen, but Maddow’s bold stance has certainly sparked a larger conversation about diversity, representation, and the future of cable news.

As the reshuffling of MSNBC’s programming continues, it’s clear that the decisions made in the coming months will shape the network’s direction. Whether those choices will prove to be beneficial or damaging to the network’s reputation remains to be seen, but for now, Rachel Maddow’s outspoken criticism highlights a growing discontent within the ranks of the network’s staff and its audience.
