Richard Gere fueled speculation about his unhappiness in Spain after a deeply “melancholic” statement during his latest speech. What was behind it?

After spending decades in the spotlight and a long history of living in the United States, Richard Gere and his family have turned a new page in their lives by relocating to Spain.

The 75-year-old “Pretty Woman” actor, along with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their children, moved to her native country in 2024.

Since their relocation, both Gere and Silva have expressed how incredibly happy they are in their new environment, a sentiment Gere shared in a recent interview with *Elle España*.

In the interview, Gere revealed how content they are with this new phase of their lives, stating,

“The truth is that you are seeing us in our momentum. We are happier than ever. She, because she is home, and I because, if she is happy, I am happy.”

Silva, who is 41 years old, reciprocated the love by calling her husband her “soulmate.”

She reflected on their connection, saying, “We have the same values, we see the world in the same way, and from the first moment, we felt that we had known each other for a long time.”

The couple met more than a decade ago, both navigating the emotional terrain of their respective divorces. Their bond quickly grew stronger as they realized how much they shared in common. For them, their relationship feels destined, as Silva put it, “We are like soulmates.”

Since their move to Spain, Gere and Silva have thrown themselves into activism. They are currently working on a significant environmental project, the Sierra a Mar initiative, located along the Mexican coastline in Jalisco. Silva, who has always been passionate about giving back, expressed her excitement about the project, emphasizing that it’s not just about environmental restoration. “When you give opportunities to the community, they rediscover themselves. They transform and prosper,” she said.

Gere echoed his wife’s sentiments about their shared mission, explaining that their work focuses on sustainability. “Our purpose is to take care of the environment, from the mountains to the sea, restore the ecosystem and the oceans. True sustainability is not measured only in the environment, in what surrounds us, but in the lives of the people who inhabit it.”

Aside from their environmental efforts, the couple has also become actively involved in charity work closer to home. In Spain, they are dedicated to the issue of homelessness, particularly in Madrid, where they now live. Silva is part of the board of the NGO Hogar Sí, which aims to end homelessness in Spain. Her goal is clear: “Our goal is that, within five years, no one sleeps on the street.” This cause is deeply personal for Silva, who sees the work as vital for creating a better society.

When Gere first spoke about their move to Spain in 2024, he acknowledged the importance of the change. “For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full-time outside the United States,” he said in an interview with *Vanity Fair Spain*. He mentioned that the move would also provide his children with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture, enriching their lives in ways they wouldn’t experience if they just visited. “I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fabulous. Your ability to live, transmitting joy and happiness, is a beautiful place,” he shared.

While Gere had lived in New York for much of his life, he expressed his excitement about Spain and the cultural shift it would offer to him and his family. He also expressed how the relocation would benefit his wife, saying, “For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture.” Gere admitted that his wife had been very generous in letting him live in his world for six years, and now it was time to give her the same.

Gere’s love for his new life in Spain is evident. He shared with *Fox News Digital* that he thought the move would be beneficial for their children, who are bilingual, saying, “I think they’ll flourish there.” He even mentioned that they would be celebrating Thanksgiving in Spain and that their two young children, Alexander (5) and James (4), were looking forward to a Christmas in their new home country. “This year finally, Christmas in Spain!” Silva joyfully posted on social media, giving a glimpse of the family’s excitement.

As Gere continues to build a new chapter in Spain, it’s clear that his family’s happiness, dedication to activism, and love for their new life together are at the forefront. Their journey is not only about embracing a new country, but also about making meaningful changes in the world around them. With every step they take, both personally and professionally, Gere and Silva seem more determined than ever to leave a positive mark on the world while nurturing their close-knit family.
