Savannah Guthrie from TODAY surprises fans as she takes on an entirely new role in a Netflix show: “I didn’t even recognize her…”

Savannah Guthrie Makes a Cameo in Netflix’s ‘Zero Day’—Did You Spot Her?

Savannah Guthrie is proving she’s not just a morning news anchor—she’s also making a name for herself in the world of television cameos.

Just weeks after her guest appearance in The Night Agent, the Today show co-anchor popped up in another Netflix hit, Zero Day.

The political thriller, starring Robert De Niro in his first major TV role, has audiences buzzing—

and Guthrie’s cameo is a fun Easter egg for fans of both the news and entertainment worlds.

Savannah Guthrie’s ‘Zero Day’ Cameo

Guthrie first appears in the second episode of Zero Day, delivering a breaking news report about the series’ central crisis, the so-called “Zero Day attack.” In her role—playing none other than herself—she provides crucial exposition about the event, which sees the entire U.S. losing electricity for one minute in what appears to be a coordinated cyberattack. Her newscast, though not explicitly labeled as part of Today, is set against a backdrop resembling 30 Rockefeller Plaza, a subtle nod to her real-life job.

“National tensions remain high since the Zero Day attack, and the overall mood remains cautious with the country slowly emerging,” Guthrie reports in the scene.

While her character’s on-air moment is straightforward, the scene takes a dramatic turn when a frustrated character watching her broadcast loses his temper. As his microwave refuses to function properly, he lashes out by smashing his television—effectively cutting off Guthrie’s news update.

Robert De Niro’s Take on Guthrie’s Acting

Guthrie had a chance to discuss her cameo with Robert De Niro himself when he appeared on Today on February 20. Taking the opportunity to poke fun at her own performance, she jokingly asked De Niro for acting notes.

“You know I have a cameo in the role. I’m playing the role of Savannah Guthrie. Do you have any acting notes for me?” she asked.

The two-time Academy Award-winning actor had nothing but praise for her performance.

“I noticed that. I want to give no notes. It was very good. It was terrific,” De Niro replied, clearly impressed.

Guthrie playfully added, “I’m very method. I wake up as Savannah Guthrie. I go to bed as Savannah Guthrie.”

“You were great,” De Niro assured her.

A Love for Political Thrillers

For Guthrie, appearing in Zero Day was a perfect fit—not just because she plays herself, but because she’s an avid fan of the genre. Speaking to Today.com earlier this year, she revealed her fascination with political thrillers, even if they closely mirror the real-life news stories she covers on a daily basis.

“I don’t know why I find that relaxing, but I do,” she admitted.

Her appearance in Zero Day isn’t her first time making a cameo in a scripted show. She’s also appeared as herself in 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm, showing a willingness to embrace her public persona in a lighthearted way.

Guthrie’s Growing List of Cameos

While Guthrie may not be launching a full-fledged acting career anytime soon, she has built an impressive list of television appearances. From comedy to political thrillers, her presence in various shows proves she’s a recognizable figure beyond just morning news.

That said, she’s the first to joke about her acting prospects.

“Though I’ve done many cameos as myself over the years, the offers to really act in any role have not been flooding in yet, so apparently I need to stick to my day job,” she quipped.

For now, Today fans can keep an eye out for Guthrie’s occasional on-screen appearances, and maybe even spot her in more surprise cameos down the line.
