Sir Stephen Fry has responded to ongoing speculation that he may be joining the highly anticipated celebrity edition of The Traitors—and,
in true Fry fashion, he did so with a touch of wit and humor.
The 67-year-old actor, presenter, and writer has been linked to the upcoming spinoff of the hit BBC deception game show,
which will see famous faces battle it out in Scotland’s Ardross Castle.
However, when pressed about the rumors, Fry made it clear that he couldn’t say much, joking that the BBC would go to extreme lengths to ensure his silence.
A Classic Fry Response
Speaking exclusively at the Newport Beach Film Festival’s UK and Ireland Honours event at Raffles London, Fry addressed the speculation with his signature dry humor.
“I can say that the BBC would slice off my testicles if I were to comment publicly on the possibility of such a thing as dwelling in a castle in Scotland for a week or two—or indeed for a day or two, quite likely,” he quipped.
He also playfully suggested that even speaking out of turn about the show could lead to immediate consequences:
“I would be fired in the driveway, which is the thing they sometimes do, isn’t it? Before you even get there, if you say the wrong thing.”
His carefully worded response neither confirmed nor denied his participation, but it certainly kept the buzz alive.
A Star-Studded Rumored Cast
Fry’s name has been floated alongside other potential contestants, including comedian Alan Carr and Friends actress Courteney Cox. While the BBC has yet to officially confirm the lineup, speculation continues to build.
Even if he couldn’t reveal whether he’d be donning the iconic cloak, Fry didn’t hold back in expressing his admiration for the show.
“I think it’s brilliant,” he said. “I’m not usually a fan of what you might call reality TV, but I think of it more as a game than reality TV—it’s just a very clever game, simple but complex as well.”
Would Fry Make a Better Faithful or Traitor?
While discussing The Traitors, the former QI host took a moment to reflect on the nature of loyalty and deception, adding a philosophical twist to the conversation.
“I don’t know which I’d be. I’d like to think in life I am a very faithful sort of person, but in a sense, we’re all traitors too, aren’t we?” he mused.
“We’re traitors to ourselves, we let ourselves down, betray our ideals… Gosh, that got serious very quickly, didn’t it? What happened there?” he added with a laugh.
Whether he would play as a cunning Traitor or a devoted Faithful remains to be seen—if, of course, he is actually part of the cast.

The celebrity edition of The Traitors is set to bring even more drama, mind games, and shocking betrayals. As the buzz surrounding the show grows, applications for the fourth series of the regular version have been extended until March 28, giving fans a chance to test their own deception skills.
Executive producer Mike Cotton previously revealed that the selection process for The Traitors is highly strategic, emphasizing that they are not just looking for fame-hungry contestants.
“We’re actively looking for people who have got a passion for playing that game and potentially might come to it with a game plan or a strategy,” he said.
“We’re also looking for people who can bring something from their own lives to it—whether that’s a skillset, a past job, a hobby, or some sort of life experience.”
Fry Keeps Fans Guessing
As for Stephen Fry, his playful teasing has only fueled speculation further. While he remains tight-lipped, his enthusiasm for The Traitors suggests that, if he were to participate, he would be a fascinating player to watch.
“Wouldn’t it be interesting to do? I think it would…” he hinted.
