Amy Dowden, the beloved Strictly Come Dancing star, has been an inspiration to many after bravely battling breast cancer in 2023. 

The 35-year-old dancer, who has been open about her journey, continues to use her platform to raise awareness about cancer 

and the importance of early detection, encouraging others to check themselves just as she did when she discovered a lump in her left breast.

Dowden underwent a mastectomy and multiple rounds of chemotherapy before ringing the bell to mark the end of that part of her treatment journey. 

Last year, she received the fantastic news that her scans showed “no evidence of disease,” though she still requires monthly injections due to the nature of her cancer. 

After enduring such a challenging time, Amy made an incredible return to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom, much to the delight of her fans.

On February 17, Amy took to social media to share her monthly visit to the oncology ward. She posted a selfie of herself sitting in a hospital chair for her treatment, captioning it: “It’s that time of the month then a very busy day ahead.” Despite the regular nature of her treatment, Amy’s positive outlook and strength have remained unwavering.

Later in the day, Dowden shared a glimpse into the celebrations that awaited her. She arrived at the Shangri-La The Shard in London after her busy day and posted a heartfelt message on Instagram. In the video, she showed off the beautiful flowers and treats waiting for her, expressing her gratitude: “After a very long day what a dream to arrive to! Thank you! The celebrations have begun! Tomorrow all seems very surreal! Thank you dear @kurt.macher @shangrilalondon.”

This celebration marked a monumental moment for Amy, as she was set to be formally presented with her MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) the following day, February 18. The award was in recognition of her tireless fundraising efforts and her work raising awareness for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Amy’s story resonates with many, particularly since she has also lived with Crohn’s disease for years, which she revealed in 2019. Her 2022 BBC programme, Strictly Amy: Crohn’s and Me, gave viewers an insight into her struggles with IBD and her journey to raise awareness for others dealing with similar conditions.

Before her cancer diagnosis, Amy was known for her enthusiasm and her passion for dancing. She has been a key figure in the Strictly Come Dancing family, delighting viewers with her routines and graceful performances. Amy’s resilience and commitment to dancing have made her an admired figure in the entertainment industry, and her recent return to the ballroom has shown just how determined she is to continue doing what she loves.

In addition to her Strictly career, Dowden’s personal life has also been in the spotlight. She married her long-time partner, Ben Jones, shortly before her cancer diagnosis, and they have since been a source of mutual support throughout her health journey. In a 2024 BBC documentary titled Strictly Amy: Cancer And Me, Amy revealed that she had frozen embryos during her cancer treatment, a decision that was part of her hope for the future, as she continues to navigate her health challenges.
