Surprising update: Law enforcement disclosed the “significant quantity of substances” Gene Hackman had stashed in his estate prior to his passing: “This contributed to his departure…”

As investigations continue into the tragic deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman

and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, authorities are uncovering more details about the scene inside their Santa Fe, New Mexico home.

The couple, along with their pet dog, were discovered deceased on Wednesday, leaving many questions unanswered.

Investigation and Autopsy Reports

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of death, though autopsies and toxicology tests have been ordered.

According to reports, investigators searched the residence on Thursday,

uncovering various medications, including thyroid medicine, Diltiazem (commonly used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain), and Tylenol.

Arakawa was reportedly found lifeless on the bathroom floor with an open bottle of prescription pills scattered on the countertop nearby. However, no official statements have been released regarding whether medication played a role in the couple’s deaths.

A 2025 monthly planner was also found inside the home, suggesting that the couple had been making future plans. Investigators also discovered two green phones and the couple’s health records, though no further information has been provided regarding their contents.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Ruled Out

The couple’s daughter, Leslie Anne Hackman, along with her sister, Elizabeth Jean, speculated that a carbon monoxide leak may have been responsible for their parents’ deaths. However, authorities have ruled out this possibility. Santa Fe City Fire personnel and the New Mexico Gas Company conducted thorough testing for carbon monoxide and other harmful elements inside the home, ultimately deeming the area safe.

According to an affidavit, “New Mexico Gas Company responded to the residence and was conducting active testing on the gas line in and around the residence. As of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated with the pipes in and around the residence.”

No Signs of Foul Play

Sheriff Adan Mendoza provided an update on the case, stating that initial findings did not indicate external trauma on either individual. “There were no apparent signs of foul play,” Mendoza said. “The manner and cause of death have not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.”

Authorities estimate that Hackman and his wife may have been deceased for up to two weeks before their bodies were discovered. Due to this prolonged period, partial mummification had begun to set in. Investigators are working to determine what led to their deaths, with toxicology results expected to provide further clarity.

A Hollywood Icon’s Legacy

Gene Hackman, 95, was one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, known for his roles in classic films such as The French Connection, Unforgiven, and The Royal Tenenbaums. He retired from acting in 2004, choosing to live a quiet life in New Mexico with his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The couple had been together for decades and lived largely out of the public eye in their later years.

The tragic and sudden nature of their passing has left family, friends, and fans searching for answers. As investigators continue to piece together the final days of the beloved actor and his wife, the entertainment industry mourns the loss of a cinematic legend.
