Today, Al Roker shared about an untreatable illness he acquired from using weight-loss medication for an extended period. He mentioned that it significantly reduced his life expectancy.

Al Roker, the popular co-host of Today, is known for his candidness and openness about personal topics,

especially when it comes to health and wellness.

In a recent interview with The Daily Mail, the 70-year-old weather presenter shared his honest perspective on the growing trend of people,

including celebrities, using medications like Ozempic and Wegovy to assist in their weight loss efforts.

While the use of weight loss drugs has become a widely discussed topic, Roker’s take is grounded in empathy

and understanding, acknowledging that each person’s journey is unique.

Roker, who has had his own battles with weight loss throughout his life, was careful not to pass judgment on others when asked about the use of such medications. “I’m not gonna judge anybody,” he said, emphasizing that, as long as the medication is used safely and effectively, it is a personal choice. His comments come amid a rising number of public figures openly discussing their use of drugs like Ozempic for weight loss purposes, sparking both support and controversy.

The Today show host went on to discuss the complexities of food addiction, calling it “unlike any other.” He explained that while people can live without certain addictive substances like alcohol, cigarettes, or recreational drugs, food is different—it’s a necessity for survival. For those who struggle with food addiction, it can be just as difficult to manage as any other dependency. This perspective has made him more understanding of people who turn to medication as a tool in their weight loss journeys.

Roker’s personal experiences with weight loss make him particularly empathetic to others who are trying to find effective ways to manage their health. Over the years, he has shared his struggles with weight loss publicly, making him a relatable figure for many. “If this is what works for them, I mean, who are we to say, ‘Oh, don’t do that’?” he said, referring to the use of weight loss drugs. His stance is that as long as these drugs are used responsibly and with medical guidance, there’s no reason to criticize someone’s approach to managing their weight.

The weather presenter added that he doesn’t like to give unsolicited advice when it comes to dieting or weight loss, acknowledging how challenging it can be for everyone to find the method that works best for them. “Everybody’s got to face that and they’ve got to figure out their path,” he said. He further reiterated that if weight loss drugs help someone reach a healthier place and allow them to live a more active life, then that’s a positive outcome.

Roker’s comments also reflect his stance from earlier this year when the topic of weight loss medications first became a hot-button issue. In March, Roker encouraged people to “stay within your lane” and avoid criticizing others for their choices regarding weight loss. His call for more understanding was a message aimed at reducing judgment, emphasizing that people should not be harsh towards those who are using weight loss drugs, especially if they’re doing so under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

This supportive mindset was again evident in May when Roker defended American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson after she publicly shared that she had used weight loss medication. During a discussion on Today, Roker expressed his frustration with the judgment many public figures face when they open up about their personal health journeys. “There’s too much judgment going on,” he remarked. “As long as they’re working with their doctors and being healthy about it, people ought to just back off and let them live their lives.”

Roker’s stance is not just about avoiding judgment; it’s about fostering a broader culture of acceptance and compassion. By speaking out about these issues, he encourages others to focus on their own well-being rather than policing the choices of others. This thoughtful approach resonates with many of his fans, who appreciate his candidness and understanding in discussing sensitive topics related to health and body image.

In his recent interview, Roker also promoted his new cookbook, Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By: Easy, Memory-Making Family Dishes for Every Occasion, which he co-wrote with his daughter Courtney Roker Laga. The cookbook highlights the importance of sharing meals with loved ones and the joy that food can bring, further emphasizing his balanced approach to health and wellness.

Al Roker’s comments on weight loss drugs underscore his commitment to understanding the complexities of health and weight management. Rather than offering judgment or oversimplified advice, he advocates for a compassionate approach to the diverse paths people take in their journey toward better health. Ultimately, Roker’s message is one of support: “If it helps you, that’s great,” he says, reaffirming his belief that everyone’s journey is their own.
