Tracy Morgan teared up as he shared the emotional struggle of his first three years on SNL, describing it as a nightmare: “Even in my dreams, I relive it…”

Tracy Morgan, known for his unique brand of comedy and breakout roles on shows like *Saturday Night Live* (SNL) and *30 Rock*,

has reflected on his early days on *SNL* with candid remarks about feeling “culturally isolated.”

Joining the cast in 1996, Morgan brought his comedic genius to a show that, at the time, he felt was lacking diversity.

During a recent interview, Morgan described *SNL* as “the whitest show in America” when he first joined the cast.

He highlighted the cultural gap he experienced as one of the few Black cast members on a predominantly white show.

While Morgan emphasized his gratitude for the opportunity, he did not shy away from acknowledging the challenges of working in an environment

that he felt didn’t fully embrace his background or perspective.

“When I got there, it felt like I was stepping into a world where I had to fight to have my voice heard,” Morgan said. “It wasn’t that people weren’t welcoming—it was just that the culture of the show didn’t reflect where I came from.”

Morgan’s comments bring attention to a broader criticism that *SNL* has faced over the years regarding diversity. Despite the show’s long history and influence, it has often been scrutinized for its lack of representation, both on-screen and behind the scenes.

When Morgan joined the show, he followed in the footsteps of other Black comedians like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock, who had also navigated similar challenges during their time on *SNL*. While these performers became trailblazers in their own right, their experiences often highlighted the systemic issues within the show’s structure.

Morgan acknowledged that *SNL* has made strides in recent years, but he felt his era was particularly isolating. “I had to bring my own culture to the table because it wasn’t already there,” he explained. “And that wasn’t always easy.”

The cultural isolation Morgan felt extended beyond the sketches and into the writer’s room. He shared that many of the jokes and scenarios he pitched were either misunderstood or dismissed because they didn’t align with the sensibilities of the predominantly white team.

“There were moments where I felt like I had to explain myself over and over again,” Morgan said. “I wanted to show people what was funny about my world, but it sometimes felt like they didn’t get it.”

Despite these challenges, Morgan’s resilience and talent shone through. He became known for memorable characters like Astronaut Jones and Brian Fellow, showcasing his ability to bring his unique comedic voice to life.

While Morgan admitted to feeling culturally isolated, he also credited *SNL* with helping him hone his craft. He described the show as a “comedy boot camp” that pushed him to think on his feet and adapt to different styles of humor.

“I learned so much from being on that stage,” Morgan said. “Even when I felt out of place, I knew I was part of something big. And that made me work even harder.”

Morgan’s time on *SNL* paved the way for his later successes, including his acclaimed role as Tracy Jordan on *30 Rock*, which earned him multiple Emmy nominations. His ability to blend his unique comedic style with mainstream appeal has made him one of the most beloved figures in comedy.

Reflecting on how far *SNL* has come since his tenure, Morgan expressed hope for the show’s future. He praised the efforts of newer cast members and writers who have brought fresh perspectives and greater diversity to the stage.

“SNL is evolving, and that’s a good thing,” Morgan said. “It’s important for the show to reflect the world we live in, and I think it’s getting there.”

Tracy Morgan’s candid remarks about his experiences on *SNL* highlight the challenges of navigating cultural isolation in a space that wasn’t designed to accommodate diverse voices. Yet, his resilience and determination not only helped him succeed on the show but also paved the way for future performers. Morgan’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of representation and the value of embracing different perspectives in comedy and beyond.
