What’s happening at NBC as several prominent hosts are unexpectedly fired without any prior notice?

MSNBC is undergoing a significant shakeup, with longtime host Joy Reid departing the network amid a series of major changes in television news.

The announcement came just hours after NBC’s Lester Holt revealed he would be stepping down from NBC Nightly News after more than a decade at the helm.

Reid, who has been a staple on MSNBC with her show The ReidOut since 2020, is among several anchors affected by the network’s restructuring.

Reports indicate that three other MSNBC anchors will also lose their weekend shows as part of a broader shift in programming.

MSNBC Confirms Joy Reid’s Exit

On Monday, February 24, MSNBC’s new president, Rebecca Kulter, officially confirmed Reid’s departure in a memo sent to staff.

“Joy Reid is leaving the network, and we thank her for her countless contributions over the years,” Kulter wrote. “Her work has been recognized with several esteemed honors, including most recently, the 2025 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News Series.”

Reid’s departure means her 7 p.m. ET slot will be temporarily filled by rotating anchors. However, MSNBC has already announced plans for a new ensemble news program in that time slot. The new weekday show will be hosted by Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez, who currently anchor The Weekend.

Reid’s exit comes as part of a broader restructuring within MSNBC, signaling a shift in the network’s programming strategy.

Joy Reid’s Response to Her Show’s Cancellation

Ahead of the official announcement, speculation about The ReidOut’s cancellation had been circulating. Late on Sunday night, Reid addressed the rumors in a statement shared on social media.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who has reached out with kindness and encouragement, both personally and in these social media streets,” she wrote. “So very proud of The ReidOut team, who are truly family, and all of our supporters & friends. See you tomorrow night at 7, one more time.”

Reid, 56, has been a prominent voice on MSNBC, known for her sharp political analysis and in-depth interviews with political figures and public personalities. Her show became an essential part of the network’s primetime lineup, particularly during the 2020 election cycle and beyond.

Lester Holt Steps Down from NBC Nightly News

Reid’s departure was not the only major change at NBC on Monday. Earlier in the day, longtime NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt announced that he would be stepping down from the program this summer after more than 10 years as the network’s lead evening news anchor.

Holt, 65, shared the news with Nightly News and Dateline staff in a memo, reflecting on his career and time at NBC.

“A smile comes to my face when I think that with Nightly News and Dateline, I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history,” Holt wrote.

He also reminisced about his early days in journalism, saying, “As a 20-year-old radio reporter on the police beat chasing breaking news around San Francisco, I could never have imagined my career path would unfold in the way it has. What an amazing ride.”

Holt has been a trusted figure in television journalism, particularly known for his steady presence during breaking news events and major political coverage. His exit marks another major transition in the industry.

More MSNBC Anchors Affected by Network Reshuffling

Reid’s exit is part of a wider restructuring effort at MSNBC, which has resulted in the cancellation of several other shows. According to reports, three weekend programs have also been axed, affecting anchors Ayman Mohyeldin, Katie Phang, and Jonathan Capehart.

Their respective shows—Ayman Mohyeldin Reports, The Katie Phang Show, and The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart—will no longer be part of the weekend lineup. However, Mohyeldin and Capehart will remain with MSNBC, moving into new roles on The Weekend.

Mohyeldin will take over the Saturday and Sunday morning editions at 7 a.m., while Capehart will anchor the evening edition at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Phang will continue her work with MSNBC as a legal correspondent.

The Changing Landscape of TV News

The latest reshuffling at MSNBC and NBC reflects a broader trend in television news, where networks are frequently restructuring their lineups in response to shifting viewership habits. With the rise of digital platforms and streaming services, traditional television news networks are making strategic changes to remain competitive.

Reid’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in MSNBC’s primetime programming, and Holt’s exit signals a major transition for NBC News. With new faces stepping into prominent roles and long-standing anchors moving on, the television news industry continues to evolve.

As MSNBC moves forward with its revamped programming, all eyes will be on how these changes shape the network’s future and whether the new lineup can maintain the strong audience engagement that anchors like Reid and Holt have cultivated over the years.
